Can anyone give me some info on moving to hawaii? |
Travel Info Im married and have three kids and want to move to hawaii.where do i start? Hawaii is so diverse you have to decide what you really want to do as a lifestyle. I've lived on three of the islands (Oahu, Big Island, and Maui). All have different environments that can be very enriching, as well as challenging. First, no matter where you pick, you're on an island and just about everything needs to be imported and makes it more expensive (thank goodness Walmart and Sam's Club arrived to atleast bring some household necessities in bulk). I think only Spam (the meat, not the email problem) is cheaper (you'll find it on sale everywhere and you can find out later why Hawaii consumes almost a third of the world's supply of Spam). The school system is adequate...some will debate the issue but you need to do the analysis and decide where you want to send your kids for their education (Public School or Private). Once you decide on the school, you have to decide where you want to live as well. Hawaii housing is the 3rd or 4th highest in the nation...so unless you have alot of equity selling your home in San Francisco, Orange County, or DC, be prepared to spend upwards of $500K to $700K for a 1400 to 1500 square foot house (you need to check if the property you are buying is fee simple (you own the land) or leasehold (the land is owned by one of the big families like Bishop Estate, or Castle and Cook, etc). Do your homework well. It costs alot to move to Hawaii. Good Luck. Others First off, go to Hawaii on vacation and scope out the islands. Talk to the locals there, and get the local paper. I love Hawaii, and have been to Oahu six times.
