Going to Oahu Hawaii in July...need some advice on things to do and places to see.? |
Travel Info These are some of the things I want to do...Jet Ski (I read somewhere Jet Skiing wasn't that great, is it true?), Parasail, Snorkel, Diamond Head, Grand Circle Tour, Shopping, and Dinner Cruise. If anyone has done these specific things in Oahu, can you please rate them for me. I want to know the best places to go shopping for designer clothes, cheap souvenirs, and what beaches I should go to...Huanama Bay and North Shore are already on my list. What are some other good tours, water activities, and RESTAURANTS. (I am going to be staying there for a little over a week.) Anything else, please tell me. Thanks. Oh, and what is the Polynesian center, and is the water park good fun for a group of people that are 19 and 20 years old? Travel Tips This is going to be long cause I enjoy talking about oahu cause I lived here for 22 years. Jet skiing is FUN as long as you go to the right people. I dont know the companies but I know in north shore is the best place to go jet skiing. I see a lot of people parasailing near kaneohe/kailua side of the island where haunama bay is and sea life park. Speaking of haunama bay. It is probably the best place and safe place to snorkel esp. if you have kids. The water is nice and mellow and there is always fish around. A tip from a local..go around 10:30-11am they block the parking cause they are bad with parking there. But it is a must go. If you go with a tour bus that is always good too. I suggest go with a rental car so you can have all the time you want. When my family was here we went to sea life park in the morning then haunama bay later in the afternoon. It was filled with fun. Diamond head is nice to go too it is mostly a paved road not really a hike but I suggest bring water and a flash light. Manoa falls is nice to go to also makapuu lighthouse (which is near sea life park and haunama bay) and there is one near waimea beach. It is right in north shore there is a nice paved hike called waimea falls. Which is nice to go too. Waimea beach is my favorite beach to spend the day! It has big waves so a boogie board is good to bring. Waikiki is a typical tourist spot so you will see these weird people standing like statues..dont stand close to them or they will grab you. and keep your wallets near you or you will get pit pocketed. I had that happen to me a lot of times its not fun. If you go on a dinner cruise DO NOT go to the starlet dinner cruise...That is the worst ever. I hated it. It wasnt great. but there is this other one that is with the starlet that is a bigger boat I believe its called the star of hawaii or something like that I hear that one is good. Ala moana is probably the only place on the island where you could get designer clothes..if your going for expensive..neiman marcus is good. I dont shop there I am more of a macys girl. haha. More of shopping...The aloha tower is a nice small area to go shopping at and to go up on the tower is nice for a few minutes to take pictures. aloha stadium is really great for hawaii souveniers and it is reasonable and cheap but you get a lot of fun stuff there. as for food...if you want hawaiian..poi bowl in ala moana is good. It is not the best but it is good to me. Polynesian cultral center is expensive but it is worth a luau and for great hawaiian food and they teach you hula dancing!! and they show these guys throwing fire..I havent been there since I was 5 years old. There is the hawaiian adventure water park its fun for kids but I am 22 and I still love that place. reatraunts to go too is great in waikiki..go to the cheeseburger in paradise and a lot of places in ala moana are great to go to eat dinner. in most places you dont have to dress too casual..People here just wear slippers "flip flops" and shorts and a shirt. check out leonardos bakery in waikiki and try a malasada!!! also if you go to north shore haliewa historical shops and food go to matsumotos shaved ice. The best shaved ice in hawaii!!! try it with vanilla ice cream!! its soooo ONO "good" and if anyone ever calls you a "haole" it means white person...so just ignore the locals they can be mean to tourists my husbands from kansas and they always yell that in north shore. and if you like to go clubbing waikiki has a great night life. Hope you enjoy your time here! enjoy. Oh yeah...dont bother going to the honolulu zoo in hawaii all they have is birds and a few animals that are always sleeping...so save your money unless you like birds then go for it. lol. enjoy. Oh yeah the USS missori memorial and pearl harbor are great places to visit for a historical time. I cant believe I forgot about that!!! (this could be a stop before you go to the aloha stadium) also the aloha stadium is open on sat. sun. and wednesdays..they also sell malasadas!! Also ft. derussy mesuem in waikiki is a great place too. try a spam musubi while your here too! They sell them at any L&L drive in.. p.s: also ward center they have great place for designer clothes...Nordstrom rack is a good place to go to..I worked there for a while and loved it!! if your coming here in the first week in july in kaneohe bay there is going to be a bay fest. so check that out too. Source(s): lived in hawaii for 22 years and going on for more!!! Other Travel Tips I have been on the Navatek 1 Sunset Buffet Dinner Cruise about 5 times and really enjoyed it! Go to Kahala Mall, or the Ala Moana Mall for designer clothes. Kahala Mall you might just spy some show biz people there. Been on the Grand Circle Island Tour and really enjoyed that! ABC stores for souvieners. For an inexpensive restaurant (yes, in Waikiki), try the Seaside Bar and Grill on the corner of Kuhio and Seaside Ave. For a unique experience, go to the Pacific Beach Hotel and try the Oceanarium Restaurant. Great food buffet style. The Polynesian Cultural Center has "little islands" of Samoa, Tahiti, etc...the people at the various islands show off ther craft, what they do on each island and they are from the island that they represent. The night show Horizons is just simply fantastic..not to be missed! Hope I helped you some! www.atlantisadventures.com (Navatek 1 sunset buffet Dinner cruise) www.abcstores.com www.alamoanashoppingcenter.com www.kahalamall.com www.pacificbeachhotel.com www.polynesia.com *You NEED to go to the USS Arizona Memorial. *Navatek has the best quality dinner cruise for the price *PCC (Polynesian Cultural Center) is a MUST (do the Lu'au package) *Or for the lu'au go to the Paradise cove one. *Anywhere by waikiki will have designer clothes and street venders ALL OVER have souvenirs. Dont buy the first ones you see TRUST ME *Water park is fun. *Kayak Rentals are fun too *Shark Cage Diving is cool *Parasailing and Snorkling are a must. *the HOLOKAI Grill is on Ala Moana ave a few blocks from waikiki and has GREAT food and GREAT drinks. HAVE FUN!!! well i just got back from oahu a few days ago i went to pearl harbor which i thought was pretty boring. if you like history then this it for you. I also went hiking on Diamond head im sure it would be really rewarding to get up to the top. I got sick half way up cause i had no water and i tried to run. bad idea. We also went parasailing you really should do that its fun. i also went on the circle tour its a must. have fun I agree with other's recommendations to go to the Polynesian Cultural Center. I've actually just written a review of it at www.govisithawaii.com Kualoa Ranch has some pretty cool tours and they are fairly well priced. We enjoyed the Dolphin Quest at the Kahala resort. That was pricey at over $200 per person, but well done. |
