Travel Info Going to oahu-hawaii, is it a good idea to use a hire car, and how expensive are they for an average jeep? Travel Tips If you're thinking about a rental car, I'd suggest you make your reservations early. The rates here are not much higher than anywhere else, but if we're sold out, we're sold out...period. There's no way for a rental car to transport extra cars in from other cities if we have a major event. Before you rent, here are some things to consider... 1. Check the parking rates/availability at your hotel. Some hotels have inconvenient parking locations and some charge $20 and up a night just to park. 2. We have fantastic scenery here, so as Heidi suggested you may want to take a tour your first time here. You'll get to enjoy the views and learn a bit rather than read maps and ask for directions. 3. We have a lot of one way streets in Honolulu, especially in Waikiki. Most street names are in Hawaiian and sound similar to a newcomer. It might be easier for you to walk, cab it, take a trolley or bus. Once again, do you enjoy reading maps? 4. You mentioned a hire car. If you're talking about a privately chauffered vehicle, I've heard they're pricey plus you'll want to tip the driver. 5. You may wish to rent a car only for a portion of your trip. That way you get the best of both worlds. 6. You may also wish to take a shuttle to your hotel so that you may take your luggage there first and you may rest after your long flight and don't have to find your hotel. The drive from the airport is pretty boring anyway. Whatever you do, enjoy your stay. Aloha! Others Rent a bike , your on a Island , how far you going ? :)) I would say buy a four-day Discovery Thebus pass at any ABC store. It is less expensive then renting a vehicle (unless you want to). The bus pass is $20.00 for four days. You can get on and off any of the Thebus buses for four consecutive days. It would be very inexpensive than renting a vehicle!! www.thebus.org www.abcstore.com I went to Oahu and didn't rent a car. I don't know much about your trip so this is hard to answer. This was my first time there so we took an island tour. Now that I know where things are I would rent a car to drive around and see them. If this is your first time, it is interesting to take the tour and let them tell you about the island. If you drive around on your own, you won't learn some of the history. I don't know the exact prices but I know you can book a car with your flight and hotel. MAKE SURE you buy all your activity tickets for anything you do at Cheap Tickets And Tours. They are very very cheap and you get the same thing everyone else does for a cheaper price. They hand out flyer's but you can ask your motel staff where the place is. It is across from the post office on Waikiki beach. I can't tell you for sure where it is but I can remember how to walk there----lol. I think they might have rental cars there too. Just be careful because one of my friends just got back from there and she had rented a car and it got broke into. They broke the window and stole her purse which had every thing in it. Have fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!... It is beautiful. www.hawaii.com http://hawaii.rentalcarshopper.com/oahuc... http://www.cheaptickets.com/app/displayc... http://www.discounthawaiicarrental.com/... http://www.carrentalhawaii.com/?utm_sour... http://www.aloharents.com/ It depends on where you're going (which island) and how long you're staying for. It'll be cheaper for you to rent a car vs. hiring a chauffeur to drive you around if that's what your question is. In response to the person that wrote about her friend's car getting broken into......that's why you don't leave your purse in the car! It doens't matter if you're in Hawaii or if you're anywhere else. Rental cars are thief magnets anywhere because rental cars are likely to have high ticket items in them (like cameras and lots of cash in wallets) vs. the trash from every day life. Believe me, there are lots of local people that get their cars broken into or stolen every day here! Have a great trip......happy travels! |
