Travel Info What is the difference in cost of living between California and Hawaii? Travel Tips The websites given to you by the first poster are good ones. I lived in California (southern, L.A. Basin) my entire life until I moved to Hawaii. Housing prices are similar but still higher than HI in most of CA. Groceries are somewhat cheaper in CA. Utilities can be lower in HI -- it depends. For example, many homes in Hawaii do not have A/C. You mostly find that in resorts and some restaurants or high end condo complexes. My electric bill runs about $150/month, but it's consistent. I don't have fluctuations because it gets cold in the winter and I don't run the A/C in the summer because I don't have any! Car insurance is about the same or slightly less in HI. Purchasing a car is more expensive in HI than in CA, in general. Daycare, preschool, and private school tuition are very similar. For me, entertainment in Hawaii is cheaper. There aren't as many concerts, plays, museums, etc. here. Many HI residents spend their leisure time at the beach, bbq'ing with friends, etc. If you have any specific requests, let us know. Hawaii is more expensive only because they constantly get almost everything they need shipped from the Mainland & of course they will ask the people of Hawaii to help pay for it by raising the prices of everything, except the stuff that is locally made. California doesn't really need to do that. They get some stuff shipped too, but not often & it's not over seas like Hawaii. In my personal opinion. California lifestyle is a lot better than Hawaii.
