Are Hawai'ians offended when a Caucasian person takes a Hawai'ian name? |
Travel Info Are Hawai'ians offended when a Caucasian person takes a Hawai'ian name? Travel Tips A Hawaiian name was given to you and defined your personality and your destiny. That tradition is seldom followed anymore. Sure, there are many people that have Hawaiian names that aren't Hawaiian, and that's fine. Sometimes people pick words that might sound cool but yet have no clue as to what the meaning of it is. Okole, anyone??? (yes, I met a non-Hawaiian named Okole) It's always good for a laugh. It sometimes rubs us the wrong way when you meet someone with a name used for royalty, for warriors, for Alii; but mostly we enjoy that they want to be called Hawaiian names instead of forcing Hawaiians to take Anglicized names (we've had enough of that already). Others i don't think so. yes you are not hawaiian. maybe you could take a afro. name or irish, mexican name too. Not necessarily, there are many Caucaisans that are born here that do have Hawaiian names. In fact we have a News anchor on Ch. 9 who is white with a Hawaiian name. A newcomer here can use his Hawaiian version of his real name. Aloha It depends on what kind of name you're talking about. If you're talking about your english name translated into Hawaiian, by all means go for it. Most hawaiians don't consider that a hawaiian name anyway. If you're talking about a hawaiian name that you think up yourself and start calling yourself....I'd be careful.....hawaiian people don't like that very much (true hawaiian names must be given to you) and hawaiian spirits like it even less! Good luck! It is kind of offensive to native Hawaiians. It's more of a question of "Why?" Hawaiians are proud of their culture. It's the same if a white person took the name of a Japanese person. They don't look Japanese, why do they have a Japanese name? It's confusing to people. It just doesn't make sense. My mother is a native Hawaiian. Because I am 1/2 white my mother gave me a Hawaiian middle name and not a Hawaiian first name. why would you want to give yourself a Hawaiian name if your not even Hawaiian? it's all in the matter of the culture. If your not part of that culture, then what's the point? your name wouldn't be as special. I say, stick to a regular name. |
