Question about Northwest Airlines?

Travel Info
My husband, and my family are traveling from Detroit, MI thru Los Angeles to Honolulu, Hawaii in March 2008. I have never flown with Northwest before and it states there are "meals to purchase." Does anyone know where I can find a list of what the prices of food would be? My husband and I normally use Delta Airlines when we go places and we never have to purchase food. We flew a direct flight out of Cincinati, Ohio in September 2005 to Honolulu and Delta fed us tons of meals and we did not have to purchase it. So Northwest just kind of threw me for a loop. Does anyone have any ideas?

Travel Tips
Most of the airlines are scaling back on their meals. You may view photos and read descriptions of NWA's food items on their website. The food is similar to theater food, basic and somewhat overpriced (but I think it's less $$ than airport food!)

If you wish to preorder a sandwich or wrap, you may do do online at NWA.com. Click on "View/Change Reservations." I believe you may purchase food without preordering, but preordering ensures you get what you want.

I suggest you bring your own snacks if possible, but keep some cash and a credit card handy in case you decide to buy something (NWA collects cash, but some airlines only accept cards, and you never know if NWA will change). Bring small bills.

I haven't tried Northwest's food, but when we boarded the plane in Honolulu (where we live), we were jokingly offered $10-15 apiece for our Subway sandwiches! People claimed NWA's sandwiches were pretty lame! I saw the snack packs and they consisted of little portions of snack foods (mini pringles, cheese & crackers, fruit rollups, etc.) Looked like vending machine food, o.k. but nothing to write home about.

My recommendations for food to take on planes:

a. Fresh food purchased right before the flight (don't wait too long before eating so you don't become ill). We buy from just outside the airport...better food, better price. If you think it might be awhile before you eat, hold the mayo. When you're purchasing food, be sure to let them know you're taking it on the plane and have them double wrap everything for you and wrap sandwich halves separately if they're really nice.

b. Pringles (they fit in the pocket in front of you).

c. Other chips/nuts/soynuts/trail mix/crackers, etc. I suggest you transfer your snacks into taller snapware containers. They'll fit in the pocket, and your snacks don't get crushed during the security shuffle.

d. Cereal (you can eat it with milk from the flight attendants..use their cup, but bring your own spoon). We do this when we take the long haul flights from HNL to Minneapolis (we land in the morning). We eat our cereal just before the plane lands.

e. Little "add hot water" instant meals/soups (bring your own spoon/fork).

e. I love to take cups of oriental noodles on board. I ask the flight attendant to add hot water. My favorite flavor is Nong Shim Kimchi. Don't know if that's polite to eat aboard a plane because of the strong aroma, but I've actually shared extra cups with fellow passengers, so I must be doing something right!

Whatever you do, enjoy your flight and have fun in Hawaii!

I don't know why people avoid contacting the airline directly.

Yes. Go on. Pick up the phone and call Northwest and ask them about that.
NWA food isn't that great these days. Your best bet is to buy something to eat in either DTW or LAX (after the security check).

NWA lists their options at

You can pre-order you sandwich. That's exciting! At least you're more likely to get what you want.

Have a happy flight!

Sounds like the last time you traveled was before the airlines cut back and served meals. Nowadays most airlines don't serve meals anymore but rather have food available for purchase.

You can either purchase the food they have available in-flight (check out the link below) or bring aboard your own food (which is what I usually do). There is no restriction as to what you can bring with you (except for the liquid restriction which applies to anything liquid). Just keep in mind that anything you bring will have to be eaten cold (as they cannot warm up your food for you).

Happy travels!

Last time I flew to Honolulu via Northwest Airlines in 2003, the price of the meals were $5.00 each. I would assume that the meal prices would not be over $10.00.
