I moving to Houston towards North West area (HP office) from San Francisco, CA?

Travel Info
I am an Indian guy, have a family (with small kids). What can I expect since I never stayed out of CA? Any insight would be helpful, in terms of cost of living, schools, crime rate, etc.

Travel Tips
Here's some specifics for the Houston area in general. Humidity is high; the summers can be brutal. But the winters are usually pretty mild. Our mosquitos are huge. The cost of living is very affordable, especially compared to California. And Texas people are usually very friendly - if you make eye contact with a person, expect them to say "hi."

In the NW side specifically around HP (Tomball, Magnolia, Spring/Klein, Cypress, etc) you can get a house over 2500 sq ft for less than $200k. Not sure about new costruction as it's been a while since I've priced that, but "older" houses (built from the mid-1970's thru early 80's) are very affordable compared to California real estate prices. Within 30 minutes of HP you can find just about any type of neighborhood you want. There ae brand new developments with smaller yards and few trees, and there are older neighborhood (built mid-70's thru 80's) that are more established and have towering pine trees on each lot. If having a more natural environment is important to you, you might even check out the Woodlands which is further north, but not a bad commute.Tell the Realtor what's important to you and have them make recommendations.

I think you'll find the crime rate to be pretty low; although every town has areas that are less-than-desirable. A good Realtor should be able to help you.

School districts include Klein IS, Tombal ISD, Magnolia ISD, and Cypress Fairbanks ISD (aka Cy-Fair). They are all good districts, but I'm sure they all have schools that are less-than desirable.

There are a 2-3 large shopping malls within 30 minutes of HP and many smaller centers. Basically, you can find anythng you need without having to travel far. Plus, a brand new shopping development is being built literally across the street from HP.

Good luck and welcome to Houston.

The only thing I didn't like about Houston is that they have too many car thieves. Other than that, it's cheaper to live there but it's no California.....good luck!

Glenloch farms about 10 miles from HP.. nice area.. Klien School district is in the top 10 list for best schools.. high tax area.. but ppl really want to get in..
Nice place to live.. HP is in Spring, tx... Growing area.. when Compaq sold to HP... HP decided to make money... and started selling off all the land.. thus... this is where it is growing.. mostly around HP!!!!
