Would you rather live in Sugar Land or Katy, Texas?

Travel Info
I am planning to more than likely move to one of these two Houston suburbs. What is the overall attitude toward these places? I know that traffic will be bad in some people's minds, but I don't care about that as much. Are Katy schools as good as FBISD? I will be working at Hermann-Memorial.

I'd also add that while the Katy Freeway is entering a new 1- year construction phase, 59 (to Sugarland) is finishing a major upgrade of the freeway -- It's going to be upgraded to an interstate soon. The Fort Bend Tollway is completed (or at least working). Aternate 90 is being upgraded to a freeway as well -- a year or two away.

So... The bad traffic to Sugarland is MUCH better now, and getting a big boost once all three of these freeways are up to standard. The HORRIBLE traffic to Katy is going to get much worse, with construction continuing out the one freeway.

IMHO, I like Sugarland better. It's newer and nicer, although property values are a bit higher.

However, I would really recommend you take where you plan to work into consideration. Rush hour is bad for only a few hours, but it can be bad. Living in proximity to where you work can make a HUGE difference.

Sorry -- I missed the Memorial Hermann part. (Medical Center, I assume?) Deffinitely Sugarland. You can take Alt 90 straignt into the medical center (on the south side of town). When it's finished, you may be able to get to work in 20 minutes. Now, it's one of the better routes.

I10 to the medical center is horrible -- you have to pass over the two worst intersections in the city (which made the top 10 worst in the country) I10 & 610, and HW59 & 610.
Others
both are nice, but homes tend to have a higher value in sugar land. also, sugar land placed as one of the top 3 places to live in a magazine recently if that makes a difference to you. The one downside i can think of is the amount of new construction in both places and homes tend to look alike. Craftsmanship has eroded and mass building of the suburbs has risen in its place. Also, keep in mind that katy was built on a rice field, so quite a few homes have foundation probs. since the ground's not as stable...pls. do your research
many ppl. w/ questions ranging from what area to move to, school ratings and scores, and builders that ppl. have had bad experiences w/ as well as good can be found here. http://www.city-data.com/forum/houston/... it's answered by ppl. who live in the greater houston area/left and they're pretty helpful in general.
My husband and I considered both of these areas when we moved to Houston from Los Angeles a year and a half ago. We used the website www.greatschools.net to help us research schools near homes that we considered buying. We found this to be a very valuable tool. Along with the accountability reports for the individual schools, there were also parent reviews of the school and staff.

Traffic on the Katy fwy is awful! That, along with the tax base steereed away from the area. The houses are newer and schools are good. There are schools within Katy that fall under FBISD also. I'm not sure which ones, but I know there are some.

Sugarland has more established communities but the schools are really good. Traffic along Southwest fwy can also be a bear but if you're coming from the Memorial area you can take Hwy 6 down from the Katy fwy too. Like Katy, the tax base for this area is very high. There are other great suburbs that are comparable distance to Memorial with great schools and a lower tax base such as The Woodlands and Kingwood. We ultimately moved to Kingwood based on all of our research on schools, home prices, tax base, and distance to downtown. Hope this was of some help.

BTW - no, I'm not a realtor, just a very informed buyer. We were making a big move, and we wanted to make sure it was to the right place ( I have no regrets!) Good luck!
Katy, Texas.
Sure, they have a lot of traffic problems, but I would never move to sugarland. I would go to Katy a million times before Sugar Land. Katy has a mall, the Katy Mills Mall. Katy also has a lot of building around it, a lot of cookie-cutter homes.

But if you can, transfer to the Woodlands Hermann-Memorial.
Lots of people move from Katy to the Woodlands.
Sugar Land is really...south.

The Woodlands is really nice, lots of trees, custom homes, a mall...and super great schools.

Now, I'm not totally going to diss Sugarland. It can be really nice. But it's not my cup of tea. Better traffic than Katy for sure.
Been There Done That
My aunt has lived in SL for about 20 yrs. She's married w/ a 17 y/o son. I have a friend who lives in Katy w/ her huz, a 3 y/o & 7 mo old. Personally, I feel that SL is full of rich snooty folks. 59S ( to SL) is worse traffic-wise than I-10 W (to Katy). I live in the Bear Creek area (I-10W & Hwy 6). I recommend Katy over Sugarland.
Hope this helped!
