Why does everyone here always want to be thanked for "helping" Katrina victims?

Travel Info
I'm not from New Orleans or Houston, but Houston didn't have a choice. It's not like they said "Hey Houston. Can you help us out?"

Maybe it's a part of human nature for some people. Something to the effect of making them feel they are here for a purpose other than themselves; they did something that contributed positively to the life of another.

I am a librarian. I get paid to be a librarian. It's not a requirement that a person thank me for helping them find resources, citations, information, teach classes etc. When I'm not having a good day or even if I am and all of a sudden someone comes back and sincerely thanks me after I have taught a class or helped them find a resource, I would be lying if I said it doesn't feel good. I think most of us appreciate "warm fuzzies" in life--possibly because they're somewhat rare??

actually..people from houston did have a choice, because if it werent for all the citizens marching their butts down to the stadium where all the evacuees were sent and help serve food, clean the toilets, and lay out mattresses god knows half the low lives in there wouldnt even help the volunteers set their own mattresses up for them to have a clean bed to sleep on. Oh and not to mention subway dontated tons of sandwhiches and the idiots "i dont want a f*ing sandwich, i want a steak" so yeah it is like houston didnt have to help. not to mention we (houstonians) are still paying the price of high crime rates (which makes our taxes go out the roof) and we are still housing the evacuees because fema keeps extending their benefits. so sorry for the sore topic- but if you were paying higher taxes and your homes and cars were being broke into and you cant go to walmart after dark because there are rapes and assaults in the parking lots and it only increased since the gangs moved from Lousiana to here..not to mention everyone from houston goes to lousiana to gamble and pay there state funds..really...thank you lousiana!
Its a left wing bs fest.
Because some people just don't say it, and it is nice to hear from people that they really did appreciate our extreme hospitality. We all know that the Katrina victims have already had a hard time, but if we are footing the bill, the least people can do is thank us--and we shouldn't have to ask for a thank you, after all that we've been through, too. I mean, where was the Rita coverage after Katrina? Peanuts. The LA people really dragged the media into their city and exploited the awful living conditions, most of which were already there before the storm came! Those people like to live off sympathy...they thrive. Houston has suffered because of them moving in--more crime, more people, more homeless, more traffic....and then a lot of people haven't even left yet! They need to get on with their lives.
I can't help but wonder why you even care. It is very apparent from all of your Houston related answers you hate everything about Houston. So pack your bags and leave. i assure you all of your negativity won't be missed.

To answer your question, it is because a lot of them had the same piss poor attitude you do and did not show one ounce of gratitude.

Most descent people were raised to say, please and thank you. Not to think everyone owes them a something for nothing.
I think it was the lack of appreciation that was shown to the Houstonians that volunteered their time and energy to help these people. Not all of them were like that, but the majority of the people that could leave Louisiana on their own did. The ones that did not were for the most part the worst of the city. The thief's and the people on welfare. When they came to Houston, they felt we OWED them. They were allowed to automatically get on welfare here, even though it is more difficult to do here.

So forgive us if we feel affronted that our crime rate has gone up, we do not feel safe, our taxes have gone up, we are still getting an attitude that we owe these people, they continue to sponge off of FEMA (which basically means we as taxpayers are footing the bill for them), and we would like a thank you now and again.

I feel bad for them, but if you were given a year (now way over a year) of free rent and hand outs, do you think you would have had a job and your life back together? Or would you still be on the couch watching the big screen TV that you bought with your FEMA check, bitching about how the government owed you more?
