Galveston - pro's and con's? |
Travel Info i want to ask the people who actually live in Galveston (or used to) the pros and cons of the place. i am from europe and i am moving there to be with my fiance in october. i have visited and had a good feel about the place. id like to know your opinion, also in regards to crime - i hear it can be pretty bad sometimes. ta! Travel Tips Galveston is very nice place but like many other towns, they can at times have problems. Most of Galveston's crime is of the petty rip-off type. There is a crack problem and because it is a beach town in a warm climate, many people with mental issues or criminal backgrounds seem to gravitate there. On the whole though, it is a safe town and is good place to live. There are a lot of things to do and quite the artsy community. The cost of living is very reasonable and the natives are friendly. The close proximity to the Houston metro area makes it all the more appealing. Houston is an international city and has just about everything you could want. Watching the full moon rise over the water is spectacular. October is a slower month for the town on a whole as it gets filled with tourists come the summer. With four cruise liners, taking a short cruise in the gulf to Belize and Mexico is reasonable in price. Welcome to the US and mainly welcome to Texas. Enjoy yourself. I might warn you about some people who call themselves "B.O.I.'s". they can be scary! lol Others Hi, Crime in general can be bad around the Houston area, so move into a nice neighborhood. Galveston has a high property crime rate and the highest number of rapes in the Houston area. Try these link: http://www.click2houston.com/news/442258... http://www.cityrating.com/citycrime.asp?... you can also use this link to compare the crime rate against other cities in the area: http://galveston.areaconnect.com/crime1.... As a UK citizen you should be advised, although you probably already realize it, that as an intending immigrant you need to have your papers in order before coming to the US. Trying to enter on the Visa Waiver saying you are coming as a visitor when you are really moving here to be with your fiance can subject you to expedited removal (ER). An ER is the same thing as a deportation, all though the inspector at the airport is the judge and jury. As such, you will be prohibited from entering the US for 5 years. Doing things the legal way might take a couple of extra months but can save a lot of heartache. Welcome to the US and good luck! Its beautiful, by the sea, good climate, friendly people, good seafood, high crime and if you don't leave before a hurricane you die con and con: It's a wannabe Long Island. Too bad for you that it's not really Long Island. |
