Lakes that are close by Houston, TX? |
Travel Info Anyone know of any lakes that allow swimming that are within an hour to two hours drive from Houston, TX? Thanks! Travel Tips Lake Conroe is probably the closest, but I enjoy Lake Somerville much more. Just take 290-west about an hour and fifteen minutes out of Houston until you get to Somerville area, then on the left side there is a Shell gas station with blinking lights past it. Turn left at that Shell, go over the train tracks and take the first right - bam, you are there. They havea $2 admission fee, but that fee provides a picnic table, bbq pits, and lots of swimming and hiking. Others Try google Earth Lake Texana State Park in Edna, in central Jackson County, halfway between Houston and Corpus Christi. Activities include camping; boating; water skiing; jet skiing; sailing on the main lake; canoeing; picnicking (tree-shaded tables and grills); lake swimming (no designated area or lifeguard); hiking; good birding; and fishing. http://www.texassportfishing.com/region_... Try: Lake Houston Also, Lake Conroe Lake Houston and Lake Conroe are obvious choices, but they are often overcrowded and sometimes kept up poorly. I would head for Lake Livingston instead. It's a very pretty area and doesn't get the congestion like the other lakes do. From Houston, it should take under 2 hours to get there. See map below... http://http://www.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=l... Sure. There's Lake Conroe for one. Lake Livingston is another. |
