Travel Tips
You are in a tough position. It's great that you paid your debt to society, and are trying to move on. I wish you luck. There are a lot of programs that help people with flawed pasts. You may be better served by looking for these programs. Once you can show a solid work history post conviction, it will be much easier to find that next job. Here are a couple of suggestions:

The Work Source (link below) -- This is a non-profit organization (based in Houston) that helps people get jobs. It will help you with resumes, paperwork, preparing for interviews, training, etc. They will also try to help match you with good positions.

Texas Workforce Commission -- A state agency which helps people find jobs. They have a special website for job seekers (WorkInTexas.com), with online job tools, resume builders, etc.

I also did some reasearch online, and found some other suggestions. I don't know how accurate these are, but these may help you...
-- Look at a temp agency. Often these will help people find work, which can lead to permanent employement. An employer who gets to know you through your work is more likely to look past the conviction.
-- The armed services will waive a one time felony (but not two) and is a great place to make a second start.
-- The agency responsible for pardons and paroles often is familiar with firms willing to hire those convicted. (Many have special programs).
-- Service industry employers (resturants, bars, delivery, retail, construction, etc) tend not to do criminal background checks. Money/health oriented employers do (banks, hospitals, etc.) so don't waste your time with those.
-- Small businesses are less likely to check, and more likely to take a chance, especially if you show loyalty and a willingness to work.
-- Check with charitable agencies -- Salvation Army, Red Cross, United Way, churches (Catholic Churches are good at this) etc. Source(s): http://www.theworksource.org/

try getting a job with the city. They tend not to care about criminal background. Just because you have a felony doesn't mean a serious employer won't hire you. It's all about how you present yourself. And if you are in the hiring process and an employer ask you about your criminal history be prepared to answer it in a very responsible way.
In today times most employers only care if your conviction involved violence or theft. If not, you should have no problem getting hired. Otherwise if they don't ask, then don't tell.

Try Networking with others. Below is a Networking group that helps people get real jobs.

Also try Project Rio through the worksource. They specialize in placing convicted felons.
