Husband & I want to move to either corpus christi or Houston area & we want to know which one's best for us |
Travel Info We are mid aged and husband is a machinist, I'm a cosmetologist. We aren't crazy about heavy traffic areas but we would make sacrifice for a decent job, clubs & karaoke bars. We like to play in the ocean. The hot weather is o.k. but we know both cities are humid & we'll have to get used to that. We will also have to rent a little while b-4 we can buy a home. We basically want to know ...how bad are traffic problems in the cities...are the beaches and water clean...how affordable is housing...are the neighborhoods nice...cost of living...people easy going...which one would you pick & why. Travel Tips I'm from Houston area and there are a lot of nice(r) places to live that are affordable that are not rightin th middle of downtown Houston. The job market for machinists is pretty good if you look at southeast Houston and up north like the Woodlands (well, not so much The Woodlands but a little further north like Conroe area.) LOTS of business for machinists around here and we LOVE our make-up here -so cosmetology is good in the market too. It does get humid and sometimes it's crazy humid - like 100% humidity and not a drop of rain! The traffic is worse when you get down into Houston, but travel time from the north on say a Saturday is less offensive and runs about 45 minutes to 1 hour to reach downtown from "the sticks". Another thing to consider is up further north in the area there are forests. Real ones with real pine trees. Galveston beach (which is nice -better than Corpus I hear and not quite as nice as Padre Island) is only 1.5 hours away. There are swaths of countryside further north, as well and GOOD fishing lakes -if you like that. SO - for variety of scenery with everything but mountains available to you within an hour or hour and a half drive, decent cost of living theNorthrth areas of Houston are excellent. They pay their machinists well out here. That's my vote for Houston. Hope it helps. Source(s): Northern Houston sub-urban country liver.... Other Travel Tips Houston is a great place to raise a family. I was raised there, and I think it was a great lifestyle choice that my parents made. Good luck and I hope your happy! Bye! :) ~Bri Experience Houston traffic is awful. It is the third largest city in the USA. Cost of living and traffic is nicer in Corpus Christi. It's easier to get out of Corpus Christi in the event of a hurricane. Most retired folk move to the Rockport area. Good fishing. I love Corpus Christi. I lived there in my teens and moved back in my late twenties. As soon as my son graduates from high school, I plan to move back. Great area, nice beaches, friendly people and traffic is not bad, plus it is affordable. Corpus Christi has better beaches, but for everything else you mentioned, Houston is better. The real estate market is on the rise in Houston, so if you are planning on buying, it would be better to do so sooner than later. Great place to live if you have a boat, Galveston's 30 min away if you want beach, Kemah's got stuff to do... housing's affordable for the time being. Rent's really cheap, and there's a lot of other cities within a few hours' drive. Clean beaches, they're ok but I don't think they close them down as often as they do in San Diego. Neighborhoods you'll have to look into. Every major city has traffic problems. It's a sprawling city with a lot of outlying towns. |
