Moving to Houston TX? |
Travel Info What do you say to some one want's to move to Houston ?I'm moving from VA and I don't care about the heat I just want to know is Houston safe place to live? wather, crime, pepole, please help Travel Tips As a transplanted Houstonian, I'd say, "Welcome to Houston!" Ignore the doof in the scuba mask. He probably just can't get a date. The weather is humid. Incredibly humid. We've been lucky that all the rain we've had has kept temperatures down this year, but on the other side there are lots of mosquitos. Don't worry, everything is air conditioned. Autumn starts in mid-October and the leaves fall off the trees around Thanksgiving. Crime has taken a bit of an upturn the past two years. We still have 150,000 Katrina "victims" here and they just won't leave. They also won't get jobs (I'm sorry, some do, and you read about those in the paper, but the huge majority still sit on their butts and live off government largesse.). Our guests live in certain areas of town which have seen an upswing. People here are nice. They're friendly. They'll give you the shirt off their backs. One thing, though, get out of the way on the freeway. If JimBob is coming up behind you in the left lane, move over one. We're nice people until some of us get behind the wheel. There are some nice areas here, and like other cities, some not-so-nice areas here. Your best bet is a suburb unless you have a few bucks. My neighborhood (Memorial) is pricey, but it is established, and it is nice, and there is little crime here. You can get more house for less money out in Katy or Sugarland or over in League City. Others Well it's the 4th Largest City in the US, Crime is about the same level as most big places(except that rat hole Dallas), weather is 100% humidity and high temps in the 90's most days in the summer, winter is about 3 weeks in Feb and plesant Jan-Apr.....Good People, good food, I lived there 10 years and liked it, would move back someday Me Houston is horrible. Everyone I know from here has left or plans on leaving. Crime is bad, people are "slow", weather is the worst in the country. If you want to move from VA to Houston I would think you are crazy Houston is a great place to live. You just have to find the right area. Are you looking to live in the city itself?? Honestly, you might want to go for a suburb.......somewhere like Clear Lake, Deer Park, LaPorte those are nice areas. It really depends on how much you're willing to spend and how far away from the city you wanna go. There are some really nice areas. The crime near downtown is pretty bad, so the further away you get from downtown the better. I've lived in the suburbs of Houston my whole life and I love it, you just have to find your niche. Like most cities, as long as you stay away from the bad spots, you'll be fine. It's very humid. The people are fine but I think the friendliness is overrated. Of course here people will be nice to your face but a lot of times it is just an act. It also seems boring to me but that is just the way I see it. Just visit the city and get a feel for it, it's up to to. Lived in Houston for 25 years. |
