Why doesn't Indianapolis have a subway system?

Travel Info
I'm asking because because Indianapolis is nowhere near water that I know of. I mean, NYC has one and they're are right next to the water. Same thing with Chicago and Boston, that I know of.

Travel Tips
As others have stated, Indianapolis was a swampy area along Fall Creeek, but according to several transportation engineers, this would not keep Indianapolis from instituting a subway system. (However in areas such as where Eli Lilly is on Kentucky Ave, this was formerly the Union Stockyards and because of the softness of the ground (due to stock bogs, if you know what I mean-- similar to a pig wallow), only a certain amount of weight can be built above ground.

We did have a great Interurban system until rail became passe and our trolley system was fantasic-- even Greyhounds used to be great. But the trolleys were an eye sore and the busses became outdated by cars-- Indiana folks are notorious about getting to where they want to be quickly (and they seem to think cars are the answer as Meridian Street and I69 can attest to in the mornings!).

The bus system is used largely by the poor, unfortunately. Since I lived in Europe, I have been pushing for subways and a better public transport system. However, to really answer your question, you would have to look at the mayor and the governor's agenda. (Not) My Man Mitch is a Bush's back pocket friend and since Bush is in oil, there is NO WAY any alternative transportation or alternative fuel initiatives are going to garner much support.

Indy has a lot of sink holes and was originally a swamp. The ground is maybe to unstable for a subway system. We used to have an awesome trolley system you could get anywhere in like 5 minutes. In the early 1900 you could leave Broadripple in the morning go to an appointment in Greenwood and still be on time for a lunch date in Chicago. It was replaced with the bus system for some unknown reason.
Indianapolis was a sparsely settled swampy area.

(1) There aren't that many people -- it isn't needed

(2) The city eminates from the circle downtown outward in many different directions. The subway would have to go ten to twelve different dfirections

(3) It's Indiana -- not every city has a subway system -- esepcially anywhere in Indiana -- not Cincinnati, not Cleveland, not Minneapolis, not St Louis, not Dallas or Denver, not Seattle or Phoenix or Salt Lake City -- you get the idea.

A subway system is really only needed in very large cities to move large numbers of people daily. Very few cities need them -- unless you are playing Sim-city
