Points of interest in Iowa and Illinois? |
Travel Info I am traveling from Omaha to Indianapolis this week. I have lots of time to kill on the way. Anything of interest I should make of point of visiting? Travel Tips I'd pick up a copy of Midwest Living magazine. They will show you a number of interesting things to see and do. Alot of it depends on what you enjoy doing -- from restaurants to gambling to historic places to cool architechture. There are nice things in the Quad Cities and Iowa City. The Amana Colonies might be cool to see. I'd travel through central Illinois -- where you can see the new Lincoln Library in Springfield. Champaign - Urbana is the home of the U of Illinois. Bloomington is a nice community in central Illinois. Casinos are located in the Quad Cities, Peoria in Illinois along your route. I'd be sure to stop and eat in Covington Indiana (right on the Illinois/Indiana line) at either the Beef House or Maple Corner restaurants. They are both worth the special visit. You will enjoy Indianapolis too. Others Depending on where you want to travel, there is the Hoover Presidential Library in West Branch, Iowa and the Living Museum in Des Moines. The Field of Dreams is still there from the Kevin Costner Movie in Dyersville. There are many things to visit in Iowas and Illinois. Just stop at any Welcome Center as you come into the state on the Interstate and you will find a wealth of information. ron You shouldn't stop in Iowa or Illinois-- just come over to Indianapolis- plenty to see and do here-- children's musuem, ghost tours, nightlife---- It does depend on what you want to see. If you want to do some shopping there is Jordan Creek Mall in West DesMoines. Living History Farms is also around Des Moines which shows 1800's living in Iowa and the Midwest. If you like baseball there is the Bob Feller Museum in Van Meter. I havent been there but I have been told that Bob is there like 95% of the time and you can just sit and talk with him for quite awhile about his time in MLB. Des Moines has quite a few clubs downtown that you could go too as well. Pella is a little town that has a lot of Dutch buildings and is famous for its tulip time festival, but it might be a bit cold for them right now. There are also always things going on in both Ames and Iowa City as they are college towns (concerts, night life, sports). Hope this helps. Andy I hope you are going to have time to see Indianapolis, too!!! Great restaurants, museums, etc. I don't know the route you are taking from Omaha, but if it takes you through Springfield, IL stop there. neat little city. and if you're a history buff, you must check out all the Lincoln sites. |
