Looking for a nice area in Northwest Indianapolis to move with these amenities? |
Travel Info We are relocating to Indianapolis and are looking for the top public school districts closest to Northwest Indianapolis. A bonus would be to know if any of these districts are near any good year round swim teams. If you could provide some good neighborhood locations within these districts it would be appreciated. Travel Tips I live in northwest Indianapolis, in a neighborhood called North Willow Farms. We raised our kids here, and it's been great. My daughter was a captain of the girls swim team at North Central High School last year. The school district is Washington Township, which is VERY highly regarded. My kids went through the system K-12, and were well-prepared for college. Two nearby districts, Zionsville and Carmel, score higher on standardized tests than Washington Township, but they are all white and virtually all middle and upper middle class. Washington Township is very diverse racially, economically, religiously. As a matter of fact lots of kids from those districts come to our High school (North Central) and pay tuition so they can participate in swimming and performing arts. The boys swim team won the state high school championship the past two years, and the girls always come in 2nd or 3rd. The swim club is great: top swimmers, plus not-so-top swimmers. The parents are friendly and helpful, and it's run very well. They just hired a new coach. The name of the club is "Washington Township Swim Club." My daughter loved her swimming experience at both the club and high school. (they're very rigorous programs. our daughter had to be at practice at 5:15 every morning, and had after school practice until 6 p.m. No weekday sunlight for high school swimmers in the winter!) The swimmers are very supportive of each other, and it's, for the most part, a very friendly group of kids. The North Willow neighborhood has bike paths, tennis courts, clubhouse, and a large swimming pool. The summer recreational swim team (ages 5-14) is very popular and fun. That's where my daughter learned to love swimming. The neighborhood is friendly and sociable. We're close to all the public schools that the kids go to. We're close to almost all the top private and parochial schools in town. And the school district is, as I said, very good if you're comfortable with a diverse population. The houses in the neighborhood go from $220,000 to $300,000. There are many other beautiful neighborhoods in Washington Township, as well. Carmel School District is just north of Washington Township. They also have a successful swim program, both club and high school. The girls high school team has won first in the state for the past 19 or so years. The boys team has also historically done well, but they had a poor year last year. The district is virtually all white, and is in Hamilton County, one of the richest counties in the nation. The swim team is more demanding of parents than WTSC (I know a single Mom who had to pay $200 in penalties because she couldn't work at a meet because she was ill and one or two of her kids were ill. The program is much bigger, so less-talented swimmers don't get to swim as much in high school competition. Zionsville is just west of Carmel. It's got a lovely little village in it, and is more rural and more wooded than Carmel. It's being developed at a very fast rate. Zionsville is where the "horsy" crowd live. They don't have a top swim program, but they have very good schools (again, very white and middle to upper middle class). Others Zionsville comes to mind -- it is very nice. I don't know about the swim team thing but it is very nice albeit expensive. Carmel is straight north of Indy and it has both great schools and the swim tem thing -- but is even more expensive. Those are the two places that I would try. |
