Family Friendly vacations 6 hrs or less from Indianapolis, IN?

Travel Info
I have two boys, 10 and 8 yrs. old. We'd like to plan on a family vacation the first part of August. Prefer driving distance from Indianapolis, IN, 6 hours or less. I am all for beaches, or just about anything (except camping!) but would prefer to stay away from theme parks. We'd plan to stay about 6 days, so plenty of activities needed to keep everyone happy. Also, we are a multiracial couple, and would prefer someplace welcoming or at least tolerant of that. We've been to places in southern Indiana, and were made to feel very unwelcomed so we'd like to avoid that if possible...lol. Affordable is also a good key word...lol. Thanks for all your help!

Travel Tips
I know you said you'd like to stay away from Theme Parks... but the Sandusky/Vermilion, Ohio area might be a good choice..

You can take the ferry over to South Bass Island (Put in Bay) for the day... and rent a golf cart to cruise around the island and see the different beaches they have...

Or stay at one of the 3 waterpark hotels in Sandusky.. The boys would like that... (Kalahari, Great Wolf Lodge, or Castaway Bay)... That would take up a whole day of running around the hotel...

Or there are numerous go cart, mini golf... and silly touristy places to stop there..

And, as a last resort.. A day at Cedar Point would be a fun time..

Good luck!

Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton, OH - FREE. Over 100 airplanes in hangars, so weather is never an issue. They have an IMAX theater that is very inexpensive. You can EASILY spend a day there.
I think you have a lot of great options if you are looking at a 6 hour driving time limit. You are only about 4 hours away from the City of Chicago and such attractions as Navy Pier, the Sears Tower, Grant Park, and all of the great museums. You are about 3 hours away from South Bend in Northern Indiana - home of Notre Dame and the College Football Hall of Fame (which is a great place to visit for adults and kids alike). You are two hours away from Cinncinnati which also has lots of great family friendly places to visit. In addition, I'm not quite sure if it is within your six your driving time or not but there is the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland Ohio as well that is great for adults as well as kids. Have a great time and good luck!
