Travel Info I hear a lot about the Northern part of Indy. Can someone describe the Southern part of Indianapolis? Travel Tips Ditto on everything LawnJesus said...i concur 100%. It's a weird dynamic because northsiders definitely think of southsiders as the redneck side of town but alternatively southsiders think of northsiders as huge nouveau riche snobs. And really both accusations are true to an extent, but certainly not 100%. Actually most of "old money" families are tied back to the southside. They are the more subdued families who may be multi-millionaires but drive a 95 Ford Taurus. It's the Northsiders (which i am from the north) that love to claim their northside status, but for as many wealthy old money people that there are here, (which in my opinion tend to be very subtle and kind non-showy people) there are an obnoxious number of yuppie types who are so in debt with their large suburban carmel homes and 4 suvs and private schools. And THEY are the ones that have the horrible attitudes and holier than thou attitudes. Bottom line is, the stereotypes of the extreme differences ARE there, and in most cases true, but for every redneck you can find on the northside, you can find a wealthy yuppie on the south side. One side note: NOrthern Indy has always had a better reputation for arts & cultural community. However, the near southside (i.e. Fountain Park) is really becoming a hip neighborhood. and still more affordable than the northside. good luck! Source(s): born in Southport, grew up in Danville (westside) and then Zionsville (northside) I'm a redneck farm raised snob! :) Other Travel Tips Well... I have lived here since birth, 36 years! The southside is traditionally or has been....more of your blue collar, high school educated individuals. That has changed a bit in recent years as the southside expands even more south, its become more white collar. We used to say....*Below 56th Street is like Kentucky!* And some areas indeed are! You have the same amentities on either side of town..as far as like Chain restaurants and stores. You might pay a little less on the southside as income level as a whole tends to be less than the North of Indy. Bottom line is you have good areas in both sides of town and bad areas ,too. Schools are basically the same once you get into the Townships instead of IPS! Greenwood Police are known for their tactics of messing with anyone, anytime, just as much as Carmel does. So, I guess its a wash as far as Police! I would say ...hmmm... Once you get far out into the Burbs...not much difference. Just subtle things. Like maybe....use of correct English! For instance.....you will hear *Them are nice shoes* way more on the southside than on the North! Think like this.......Jeff Foxworthy and Larry the Cable Guy....Thats what you have on the southside of Indy. On the north side, you would have more of a Ben Affleck , Jennifer Aniston type people! That help???? It is nice around the Greenwood/Southport area. It has housing as nice as the northside just not as snooty(people) as the northside. There is a huge mall on the southside and alot of traffic but anymore that is the case anywhere you go. Live here oh wow! try living on 42nd and post back in the 90's a slice of compton! but mayor peterson has really don a lot to shape up this city! that guy is cool as hell! i met him and i met bob and tom! they all 3 rock! |
