Who built Indianapolis? |
Travel Info I want to know who built the capitol of Indiana-Indianapolis. Travel Tips The capitol building: The Indiana Statehouse (Indianapolis capitol building) was the design of Indianapolis architect Edwin May was selected in 1878, with a cornerstone laid on September 28, 1880. Construction was completed in October, 1888, supervised by architect Adolph Scherrer, May's chief draftsman, following May's death in February 1880. The city of Indianapolis itself (from Wikipedia): Jeremiah Sullivan, a judge of the Indiana Supreme Court, invented the name Indianapolis by joining Indiana with polis, the Greek word for city; literally, Indianapolis means "Indiana City". The state commissioned Alexander Ralston to design the new capital city. Ralston was an apprentice to the French architect Pierre L'Enfant, and he helped L'Enfant plan Washington, DC. Ralston's original plan for Indianapolis called for a city of only 1 square mile, and, at the center of the city, sat the Governor's Circle, a large circular commons, which was to be the site of the Governor's mansion. Meridian and Market Streets converge at the Circle and continue north and south and east and west, respectively. The Governor's mansion was finally demolished in 1857 and in its place stands a 284-foot-tall (86.5-meter-tall) neoclassical limestone and bronze monument, the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument. This is now known as Monument Circle. Of course, any city is built by a number of people, and not just one. Any people who wanted to live in Indianapolis in the old days built their own house and moved in.
