What can I expect in Indiana? |
Travel Info I currently live in Southern Calfornia and my family and I are moving to Indiana. Obviously the people and the weather are completely different, but what else can I expect? Travel Tips I moved to Indiana three years ago. I used to live in another country and in a very big city, so what I have found is that people are friendly and very conservative, people drive fast (always above the speed limit - to my surprise), but I never see traffic jams, people are very family oriented, they enjoy decorating their porches and front yards in the Spring and Summer. At least in Northeast Indiana, there are lots of lakes and ponds, which I find very nice. People love nature in general, and especially birds. There are beautiful birds, like the Cardinal, which is the State bird. There are malls, but there is life outside the mall, LOL. Sports are very important. People can name players (of any sport) and couches and they even know where they used to couch before that. According to the season, there will be a sport that people watch. Since there is no ocean, people swim in lakes. They say "I'm going to the lake" just like other people in other places would say "I'm going to the beach". The landscape is flat (meaning there are no mountains) and mostly corn and soybean are grown. I must say I really like living here, although I miss the ocean. I hope this helps. Others You can expect friendly people. You can expect probably lower prices. Four very distinct seasons. Drive in movie theaters open in the summer, and an all around good time. A lot of cornfields. Depends on what part of Indiana you live in. You can also expect to pay an arm, a leg, and your firstborn for your license plates for your vehicle. lifelong Indiana resident It depends on what part of the state you move to. Some places are very rural and centered on farming while some are urban. Generally, the people are friendly and quick to welcome new people to town. The prices on things are probably lower than you're used to. Again depending on where you live, things can be very spread out. It's not uncommon to drive 30 minutes to get groceries or an hour to go shopping in a mall. I hope everything goes well for you! Much less sophisticated people. High school is everything. Basketball is everything. Over-the-top "this is the greatest place to live in the world even though we've never ventured out of our own town" attitudes. Fear of people from the east or west. Life in a bubble. And don't tell them what you really think, they don't want to hear it. 10 years experience. Indiana is the best place to live. It isn't and "over crowded state" like California. The people are really friendly here and you can make friends fast. The weather is good/bad. We had a major ice storm in February and the local schools were off for the week. Now it is about 90 degrees. So there is a huge different between our winter and summer season. Indiana still offers alot to do depending on where you are movie to . Northern Indiana offers Lake Michigan and the beaches which is always fun to do. North Western offers Chicago which is only a 30 minute drive. I myself however live in Indiana but within the Greater Cincinnati Ohio Limits so there is tons of shopping, entertainment, and amusement parks. So it all just depends what part of the state you are moving to. |
