South pacific a high risk destination?

Travel Info
Hi there, was thinking of a stop-over in either tahiti or Cook islands on route to Australia but husband says it's too risky now with the threats og Tsunamis.....
What do you think?

Travel Tips
have to echo the previous responses; a lot of the ant-american sentiment is just hype. most people are capable of distinguishing between a country's government and someone that just happens to hold the passport. no doubt the american government is very unpopular globally at the moment but indonesians (if i may make a few groundless and sweeping generalisations) still get nostalgic about clinton, hate terrorism, appreciate anyone that wants to have a bit of a chat, and are mostly friendly. the travel advisories for any country tend to be overly cautious, which is understandable...its good advice but take it with a grain of salt. most places will be very safe.

tsunamis are a rare event...but if you feel an eathquake, get to high ground, quickly.

Your husband has given you some great advice.
Tsunamis are not your biggest concern , if you happen to be American, just make sure you are not where you shouldn't be. You will find Americans are not liked in most places in the far eastern sections, don't ask me why,
ask George Bush.
The last time we were in Sumatra we were treated as though we were devils. not much fun for sure, these are troubled times for All American travellers read the us travel advisory.
Australia is a wonderful safe country, but really big and very old. quite a change from what we call fun in the sun. they live a different life for sure.
Not much to add to t-bones answer but; tsunamis are not a risk, ok so there's been a couple in the last 2 years or so, but the danger is minimal. You do dozens of things every day which are more dangerous e.g. crossing the road.
As for the anti-American thing, though I haven't been there myself, I know several people who have and the general attitude is a dislike/loathing of most westerners, with Americans being top of the list, followed by the British.
Of course, there are places where this dislike is put aside in favour of the money you would spend there, but I can't advise where.
Maybe go a bit further north to Thailand/Cambodia etc. where attitudes are a bit more friendly.
Tsunamis are not a great concern unless you are on the coast.

I am an american and just spent 2 weeks in Indonesia(Jakarta, Bali) and people were super friendly. No worries.

Just stay away from western type establishments and protests if they come up while you are there.

Remember 99% people in this county are peaceful, its the rare few which the media concentrates on.
Tsunami is not a major thread, because it's kinda 100 years cyclical phenomenom.

You'll be safe in Indonesia. Don't worry about safety. It's just media blow-up. Yes, there are some protests againsts US government in Jakarta or othe big cities recently, but they're peaceful rally. Stay away from any rally because eventhough it's peaceful, they can trigger riots if somethings are out of control.

Just go to Bali and enjoy the sun and sands.
Bon voyage...
Hi, what you husband鈥檚 advising is share opinion that concern to your family safety. He is a good man to take care of you and your family. Yes we agree recently some disaster from the nature like tsunami was happened in that island like what happened in Indonesia because this island is located in the line of the earthquake. But we have full understood that the disaster might be happened in everywhere including your home which we do not know when it will be happened. I also agree with your husband but not this entire island got such thing. Anyway why you do not try to pass another island like Bali then connect to Australia. Bali is a beautiful island that many tourists have visited it. Here you will find the real hospitality from the people.
