Travel Info Are there cheap places to shop near the Sultan Hotel in Jakarta? what are good souvenirs to buy? Travel Tips For cheap price, go to Blok M. For classy stuff, go to Plaza Senayan or Senayan City. Buy some batiks for souvenirs or t-shirt. Others The nearest Shopping Mall is Plaza Senayan, you can buy batiks, wayangs or silver accessories. Or you can go to Blok M for cheaper shopping http://www.drwinduclinic.com http://www.friendster.com/rwindu... "kuih lapis" which is a layered cake. You should go Mangga Dua. It's so big. You can find everything there. I went there once. I'm telling you, one day isn't enough. So many great finds, so little time. I'm just not sure if it's near Sultan Hotel. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/enjoyjakar... the closest place to go is Plaza Senayan and Senayan City; both are reputable malls where you can buy the most exclusive items. not very cheap for Indonesian standards but very affordable for Western standards. if you still want a place that is cheaper, in theory the closest place to go is STC Senayan, which is right next door to Plaza Senayan. but nobody really goes there, the selection is rather poor and many shops are closing. the second closest shopping place to that is Ratu Plaza, just around the corner from STC; it's mostly electronics there but i think i spot a few places to shop for gifts there. places that are a bit longer than 5 mins drive/30 mins walking from Sultan but definitely worth having a look at include: -Sarinah: Jakarta's first prototype "mall". It's a bit old fashioned, but if you go up to the 4th floor you can find all sorts of Indonesian gifts, including silver, wooden carvings, miniature music instruments, display keris, and wayangs (leather puppets). About 15 mins from Sultan by taxi. -Pasaraya Blok M: somewhere upstairs you can find Indonesian gifts like in Sarinah, but it;s a larger selection. about 20-30 mins from Sultan by taxi -Mangga Dua: famous place to shop if you're looking for great souvenirs at wholesale price. best to go there if you can take an Indonesian friend who is experienced in "tawar-menawar" (barganing) -Pasar Tanah Abang: if you want to look for textiles, come here. -ITC Kuningan: another good place to shop for clothes, shoes, and bags at wholesale price. it's not fancy like in the mall--it's more like an indoors airconditioned market--but you find some pretty good buys here. there's a good selection of textiles as well |
