How much money should I bring to Jakarta for 3 weeks? |
Travel Info Pocket money only. If where ever I'm going accept credit card.. I will use the card. Cash- for places that don't take credit card. How much USD? Travel Tips Food : US$ 2 - 3 /meal. Indonesian, Chinese & Western food are widely available. Fast food giants like McDonalds & KFCs are everywhere. Accomodation : 3-star = US$ 45.- avg, 4-star = US$ 70.- avg, 5-star = US$ 120 - 200.-. Reserve your hotel via internet vendors, it costs you less. One of them is www.asiarooms.com. If you are already in Indonesia and looking for hotels, you can buy hotel voucher via travel agents to save you some penny. Taxi fares : Minimum Rp. 6,000.- (US$ 0.7.-), normally you won't spend more than US$ 10.- /trip if you are just going somewhere else within Jakarta. Taxi fare from airport to city will cost you around US$ 15.- to 20.-. It is recommended not to take public buses, as it is not safe, even for locals. Visa & Master Card are widely acceptable. American Express & Diner are acceptable in hotels and high-end shopping centers, but not widely accepted. Honestly, being a country with an average income of US$ 1,000.-, living expenses in Indonesia, especially Jakarta and other larger cities, are not even cheap, but very very high. Good luck for your trip. Others It depends on what type of accomodation you choose, kinds of activities, etc. My idea of staying in a 3-star hotel such as the Ibis hotels (Jakarta has several Ibis hotels) with room rate of around Rp. 400,000/room night (incl. b/f for 2) and not doing too many sightseeings and clubbinggs, etc... perhaps Rp. 15 million or roughly US$ 1,600 will be more than enough to support 1 person to live for 3 weeks in Jakarta. If you have free or cheaper accomodation you may save up to more than half the figures... I highly reccomend u to bring around USD 700-1000 (for pocket money only)..Shopping in Jakarta is not cheap...In fact, shopping for clothes are much cheaper in the US..there's no Wal-Mart or JC Penny in jakarta...Most of the clothes are happened to be branded and expensive...However, for food, it's not too expensive...around USD 3 or 4 per meal (in a decent and nice restaurant).. If u want to find cheap clothes, u should go to Mangga Dua...Just tell the taxi driver that u want to go to Dusit Hotel in Mangga Dua (he'll know)..The hotel's lobby is attached to the shopping centre...from there u can ask the people around to show you which directon leads to the clothes shops and dvd shops..(It's two diffrent direction) there u can also find fake DVDs...they have a lot to offer...from Grey's anatomy to scrubs...they practically have everything!...one dvd for less than 50 cents/5000IDR...(It's true!)...But be careful...sometimes u have to bargain for a lot less..cuz if they find out that u r a tourist/foreigner, they will give u a higher price... In Jakarta, u can use your credit card anywhere (even in Mangga Dua and Ice cream stalls), so no need to bring too much cash, and beware for robbers in the street!... Good luck and have fun! I'm an Indonesian... bring $100, u can buy a lot of things.. :D Indonesia is really cheap. I think 500 would be more than enough. |
