If your family wish to stay in the white sandy beach with calm seawater, Nusa Dua area is the perfect place. The Third choice in Kuta Area. There are a lot of hotels in Kuta suitable for family. I would recommend the Hard Rock hotel in Kuta, but be sure to get a suite -- not a huge difference on price. The Hard Rock is well located and has a great pool with water slides, etc. -- when you go be sure to rent a cabana (about $20 per day). Personally, I prefer Ubud in the mountains. Cooler temps and plenty of cultural activities, whitewater rafting, monkey park, etc. -- I suggest you hire a local guide/driver who will arrange accomodations to meet your needs; however, if you have teenagers you won't be venturing far from the Kuta beaches. Waterboom is a great waterpark south of Kuta with plenty of fun for a day. Have a great trip. Bali is a personal favorite. Hard Rock Hotel... Loved it! might sound teenage like but its Family Friendly... Unless you want to go to another hotel which is totally Balinese The Ritz Carlton...!
