Oriental customs that I should be aware about? |
Travel Info I will be visiting Indonesia in a few days on a business trip. I have concerns regarding my form and technique as I will be meeting several important Indonesian businessmen. I would like any tips or suggestions in how I can approach the situation as properly and as etiquettely as possible. Travel Tips I'm Indonesian, just be polite, they can excuse you as foreigner if you don't do our custom. But some manners that westerner found normal might look rude to us, such as: - sitting on the table - entering someone's house with shoes on - drinking / ordering alcohol in dinner/lunch meetings, please put in mind that 80% of indonesian are moslem, so alcohol isn't widely available and somehow taboo. a firm handshake is expected with a little bow, greetings when meeting and leaving. Using some Indonesian phrase might impress them, here are some: Good Morning : Selamat Pagi Good afternoon: Selamat Siang Good evening : Selamat Malam Goodbye: sampai jumpa Thank you : Terimakasih. Goodluck on your business trip! ^^ Source(s): I'm Indonesian. Other Travel Tips A few things to note when doing business in Asia: 1) Namecards should be given & received with 2 hands 2) No scribbling or writing on the namecards you receive 3) Besides the ususal "How are you", Asians tend to greet one another by asking if they had their breakfast/lunch/dinner (as opposed to asking about the weather) 4) If you have your meal with them, do not be surprised if they start placing food on your plate (mothering you) - graciously accept the food The rest of the usual politeness comes into play as well. Good Luck & have fun! lick their ***!!! 1. try not to look too powerful, they might think that is bragging gesture 2. praise everything!!! and i mean EVERY SINGLE THING!!! 3. don't dominate the conversation, let them talk for hours and hours 4. about the business card, place them infront of you when you're sitting on meeting table 5. if they praise you, try to be humble. instead of saying thank you, say "oh.. really it's nothing" 6. if u order drink, try not to order alchohol if they're not ordering it. good luck! Hello... this link will help you...http://www.jakartaexpat.com/community/bu... Enjoy Jakarta!!! Don't hand anything to anyone or take anything with your left hand. It's seen as dirty. Don't call just the name. Use 'Pak' for men or 'Bu' for women before the name. For example: 'Pak Bambang' or 'Bu Siska'. It is more polite. |
