Do a lot of people in Malaysia and Indonesia speak Tagalog? |
Travel Info Just wondering, I figured that since the countries have such a related language and close geography, they would. And I am wondering for the reason are there a lot of OFWs(Overseas filipino workers) there? Travel Tips Indonesians speak Bahasa Indonesia, Filipinos speak Tagalog and Malaysians speak Malay. But due to original root of ancestry and geographic locations, there are a lot of overlapping words between these three languages (especially between Malay and Bahasa Indonesia). There are a lot of Filipino workers everywhere you go, but more so in Singapore and Malaysia cause it's closer. Filipinos speak very good English, making them more desirable than say Indonesians. Others ONLY SPOKEN IN PHILIPINES NOT MALAYSIA OR INDO The languages spoken in Malaysia are Bahasa Melayu (Malay, official), English, Chinese dialects (Cantonese, Mandarin, Hokkien, Hakka, Hainan, Foochow), Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Panjabi, Thai; several indigenous languages (including Iban, Kadazan) in East Malaysia. The languages spoken in Indonesia are Bahasa Indonesia (official), English, Dutch, Javanese, and more than 580 other languages and dialects There are some similarities between the languages. satu, dua, tiga, ampat, lima...(my spellling may be off...but you get the jest) 1, 2, 3, 4, 5... You would have no problems picking up the language (Bahasa Indonesian) in a relatively short time. Plus, many in the larger towns speak english very well. Back to the original question; I'm not sure about the ones speaking Tagalog, but I was able to communiate with one using Thai. Many work and travel throughout the region up through Malaysia and into Thailand, as well as Philippines. You may run into more of the southern Philippine dialects there due to the large Muslim population. I used to live there for 2 yrs with my whole family and got to meet a lot of filipinos...maybe it because of the expatriated community we are in but I dont know about others who are not an expat.. It would be like saying that Spanish and English are related. Or maybe spanish and french. There are a lot of similarities, but still not enough enough to allow people to understand each other. Not a huge relationship between those countries and they are most likely going to speak English with each other. Phillipino workers because there are lots of jobs! |
