Anyone out there living in Bali, specifically Ubud? What is the time difference between California and Bali?

Travel Info
For example, if it is midnight in California how many hours later or earlier is it in Bali? And I have many other questions, especially for expats living there, so please let me know, as I'd like to e-mail you to get some information-like how to stay for longer then the alloted month that they give you as a visa limit?

Travel Tips
I'm not living in Bali, but I go to Indonesia lots of time, especially Jakarta, Surabaya, and Bali because I used to be Indonesian.

California: GMT -8
Bali: GMT +8

For your information, Indonesia has three time zones.

TIME ZONE 1
WIB (Waktu Indonesia bagian Barat or Western Indonesian Time) belongs to Sumatera, Java, West and Central Borneo (Kalimantan) with GMT +7 and usually all important activities are scheduled based on this GMT due to its proximity to Indonesia's major cities, such as Medan, Jakarta, Semarang, and Surabaya.

TIME ZONE 2
WITA (Waktu Indonesia bagian Tengah or Central Indonesian Time) belongs to South and East Borneo, Bali, South East Nusa (Nusa Tenggara), and Sulawesi with GMT +8.

TIME ZONE 3
WIT (Waktu Indonesia bagian Timur or Eastern Indonesian Time) belongs to Maluku and Irian Jaya (Papua) with GMT +9.

There is no Daylight Saving Time implented in any areas in Indonesia.

During Standard Time, the time difference between California and Bali is 16 hours. The time in Bali is 16 hours ahead the time in California. So, if it is midnight in California, it is 4 p.m. in Bali.

During Daylight Saving Time, the time difference between California and Bali is 15 hours. The time in Bali is 15 hours ahead the time in California. So, if it is midnight in California, it is 3 p.m. in Bali.

Ubud is known for its tourist destination, not as expatriats hometown. So, if you are working in Bali, choose a bigger city to stay at, such as Denpasar (the capital city) or Kediri.

If you are an American, you will be given a visa when you enter Indonesia with Visa on Arrival procedure. If you want to stay longer, please contact Indonesian Embassy before leaving your country to find out the way to extend your visa limit.

A friend of mine, who comes Portland, OR has a wife from Indonesia. His wife sponsored him to get a cultural immersion visa, so that he receives a longer visa limit. But when his visa is going to expire, he needs to go to another country (he went to Singapore) to apply for a new visa. So, based on my friend's experience, I can conclude that you ought to re-apply for a new visa if your visa has expired.

It is illegal to stay inside Indonesia after your visa has expired. The immigration officer may do these following things if you leave Indonesia after your visa has expired:
1) Allow you to leave Indonesia (This might happens rarely).
2) Fine you (Remember, it's going to be very, very expensive!).
3) Bring you to the jail!!! (And this also might happens!)
Anyway, the punishment you will receive is based on Indonesian own policy or usually it uses KUHP (Kitab Undang-undang Hukum Pidana).

Although the Indonesian government will not remove you on site after your visa has expired, they will generally "punish" you when you leave Indonesia.

The cost of expatriats to live in Bali might be MORE expensive than the cost of expatriats to live in the Jakarta (the capital city) since Bali is number one tourist destination in Indonesia while Jakarta is number one business/financial activities destination in Indonesia.

For example, if you live in Bali, to buy a medium-sized pizza you may have to pay Rp 100.000,00 (about $10), but if you live in Jakarta, it might be 3/4 or even 1/2 the price, or about Rp 50.000,00 (about $5). The cost of living in Surabaya (the second largest city in Surabaya) is HIGHLY LESS expensive than the cost of living in Bali and Jakarta.

If you have more questions, you may post a new questions in Travel -> Asia Pacific -> Indonesia, and I'll check often to see if there are more questions to be answered.

Have a good time in Indonesia!

It's about 15-16 hours difference from Calif to Bali.
Indonesia is divided into 3 zoning: WIB (for western part of Indo), WITA (mid), and WIT (east). Bali is in WITA zoning.
If you have any other problem about time zoning, try to visit http://wwp.greenwichmeantime.co.uk/time-...
Stay longer? Hm, you better not doing that, it's a violation.
Except you want to apply as a citizen... Then you can stay in Bali as long as you like without visa. =>

I believe right now because of Daylight Savings time they are 16 hours ahead. Here is a great website with all kinds of useful information for non-Indonesian Citizens living in Indonesia. Like another person said, be very careful about overstaying. Make sure you do it legally. Take a weekend trip to Malaysia or Singapore and come back if you must, and make sure you never leave the US with a passport that will expire 6months- 1 year from when you leave. Better safe than sorry, go ahead and renew it.
