Traveling to Indonesia soon, I've read you can only bring gifts totalling $100. ..?

Travel Info
what happens if you bring gifts worth more that $100? do they tax you (and if so how much?) or make you leave things there? do you need receipts for gifts? or do they estimate? i need to buy for a large family and $100 just isn't enough... does anyone know???

Travel Tips
You shouldnt need to worry, but dont call them gifts. They are just your items, dont declare unless its a prohibited product. I take full suitcases into Bali all the time, with no problems whatsoever. Enjoy your trip.

If you read it to be $100, then it's $100. The best thing is to always bring the receipt. By the way, is it Australian Dollar, US Dollar, Singapore Dollar or Canadian Dollar?
I'm Indonesian, unfortunately i heard many bad things about custom in Indonesia borders.. I would recommend you not to declare anything, unless very valuable items or if it's required by the custom (etc. big pack of cigarretes, alcohols, etc.).. if you bringing home electronics, i suggest that you unwarp and unpack the stuffs, then you can claim that it's only for personal use.. split your belongings or gifts in several bags or suitcase (not all you put in one)

don't worry too much and don't ever look suspicious! then i believe that you will have really pleasant journey and bring beautiful memories and gifts home!

bon voyage!

PS: otherwise if you do get 'caught' and need to declare and pay custom, don't bribe the officers (which i believe they would ask for one), you'd probably will pay more than you should
I would refrain from carrying too many gifts into Indonesia - you'd be lucky if you still have the same number of gifts after you've passed Customs and Immigration (bunch of thieves and robbers in uniform)
100$ is ABSOLUTELY ENOUGH

things are very vey cheap in indonesia

how big is your family?
20?
then you have 5$ each
it's still lot of money here

with 5$ (45.000 rupiahs) you can get good stuff
here's the comparison : in indonesia, you can buy a can of coca cola for just Rp. 3600 (40 cents).

if you buy @ big stores, they'll tax you 10%
if you buy @ small stores/independent artist, they won't
The main thing is that you can bring gifts totalling US$ 250 per person OR US$ 1000 per family. You choose one of them. So, it's not really $100. I have the proof here, and please "add details" if you really want to see the proof because I have a blank Indonesian Customs Declaration form. I'll scan it and give the link for you.

I really hope that you are traveling with a bigger aircraft in a busier time. If you are arriving at evening, you are so lucky. During 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., it is the "rush hour" for SURABAYA JUANDA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT and also JAKARTA SOEKARNO-HATTA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT. Ditto with DENPASAR NGURAH RAI INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT. The customs officers will have so many things to do so most of the time (especially in Juanda), officers will just put your baggage into the x-ray machine and let you go. Beware if you are arriving at Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta or Ngurah Rai.

DON'T BRING LARGE SUITCASE(S). Sometimes, they will cross your suitcase with white chalk or something else. That means, officers will have to open your suitcase no matter how you insist on not opening it. Even if you don't declare, they will still open it.

Do not declare anything since they actually don't know how much your things are actually worth. Stay calm and normal. If they stop you and search your luggage and find so many things, say that they are your own belongings. This is not recommended if you don't like to lie, and I have never do this thing.

If in transit time you buy an expensive thing, such as handbag (LV, Guess, etc.), wear it. Officers will think that it is yours.

No need to bring the receipts, they will not ask it.

Oh, by the way, you may bring a lot of parfumes because Indonesia policy states that parfumes in reasonable quantity may be brought into Indonesia without any declaration.

If you don't belive all of these, just wait and see! This really happens in Surabaya Juanda, but is expected to happen in Soekarno-Hatta and Ngurah Rai as well.

Arriving in Surabaya Juanda is "more painless" than arriving in Soekarno-Hatta or Ngurah Rai.
Immigration queues are not as long as those in Jakarta or Bali and so with customs, though usually it is still very long. But compared to Jakarta or Bali, it is nothing.
From Singapore... traveling to Indonesia (especially Surabaya) so many times in a year... but also Jakarta.
