What are you worry about? If you are non Indonesian people, do not worry, Surabaya is safe. If your children like playing, go by taxi in the morning to Ciputra Waterpark, that will be exciting for children, many water attraction there, you can let them play till afternoon come.
No worries. Surabaya is safe and you can take your children to many places, enough to keep them busy.

Just do not drink tap water.
Hi,

I'm a Dutch person and worked in Indonesia as a tourguide for 9 years.

Your children will be safe and welcome amongst the Indonesian people, and they will find friends too if you allow them.

However, Surabaya has crazy traffic and your kids will need to be attended when leaving the hotel.

A few points of attention:

- Tell your children to not flash their pocket money on the street. This goes for the adults as well, perhaps more.

- Tap water, ice cream and ice cooled drinks are not safe (but the Marriott is a modern hotel, they will serve safe drinks only, with ice cubes made of spring water)

- Make sure that your children drink a lot of (spring) water. If they are not used to the tropics, active kids might dehydrate before you even notice. You can buy bottled spring water (Aqua) everywhere. Let them drink atleast half a bottle with their breakfast, to begin with. And make sure that they drink throughout the day.

- If they have trouble with the damp and hot climate, visit the shopping malls (aircon!)

- If they get diarreah, do not panic! It is a normal way of adapting to the climate and the environment. It is not wise to medicate them with diarreah-blockers on the first two days of the sympthoms. Some black tea and white rise would be much better for a child's system. Trust me on this one!

- Indonesian people will love your children if they can say a few words in Indonesian language:

Terima kasih = Thank you
Apa kabar? = How are you? (a is pronounced as in "bath")
Siapa namamu? = What is your name?(pronounced: see-apah nahmah-moo)
Namaku Jane = My name is Jane (namah-koo)
Selamat pagi = Good morning (slah-maht pah-kee)
Selamat malam = Good night (slah-mat mah-lahm)

Enjoy!

Surabaya is safe for everyone, however, we must be alert when walking on the street.

The marriott hotel can guide you where to go and you also can approach "Polisi" = police for information.

Enjoy your holiday in Surabaya.
