Can Indonesians Understand Malay? |
Travel Info I know the languages are related and similar, so can speakers of Indonesian and Malay talk without confusion? What is the most difficult part of communicating with Malay-speakers (for Indonesians)? Travel Tips Can, but Bahasa Indonesia uses more Dutch loan words which malay Malay-speakers may not understand while Malay uses more English loan words. Others A little, but confusion is also guaranteed. Sometime same vocabs completely different meaning. Or the same pronounciation but different writing/spelling. Comparison: Dutch and German. A little bit, though some words are not applicable to each other. Also, Indonesians use more Arabic loan words than Malaysians do. Yes, they do. Most words are spelled the same but pronounced a bit differently. If ever a word is not understood, they just understand from the context. To make sure one is comprehended, I suggest speaking a bit slowly so the listener can catch up. I'm Filipino and I'm learning Bahasa Indonesia now. Terima kasih, kawan. I do believe that Indonesian can understand Malay well. I have been to Penang for several times and I can understand them, either orally, audiotory or written text. But they have difficulties to understand us (Indonesian) because we have more slangs. // I'm Indonesian Yes, most of the time. A little difficulty in understanding other's pronounciations, or some words that have different meaning though they pronounce the same. eg: 'tandas'. Malay: tandas is toilet Indonesian: tandas is finished or nothing left. |
