Travelling alone in bali? |
Travel Info Hi i am turning 21 this year and as a bdae gift for myself, would like to travel alone to Bali. (never tried it before and i am excited!) however, before i buy the tickets, i would like to know if it is safe a female to travel get around in Bali, especially at night to the bars? Also, wad accomodation would u recommend? I would prefer one with professional spa services and comfortable accomodation. Lastly, how much does things cost over there? thanks! Travel Tips Generally, Indonesia is rather safe. Bali is one of my favourite places on earth. Balinese people are used to tourists and are quite relaxed, so in the touristic areas there is no major problems. Bars are safe... if you go to a place with many locals and no expats/tourists (which is rather unusual), you might be approached by locals, but I haven麓t heard much about real dangers. I recommend you go to the 7/11 or similar shops there to check the prices for daily necessities...(write them down !!) because there you will find price tags. In shops in remote areas you will have to bargain for any single item, and if you don麓t know the prices, they will rip you off. If you have no clue about the price, start bargaining at 20-30% of the initial price... than you have a chance of ending up with a price that is not more than twice as much as a local would pay. If you buy many items, recalculate the final price. Even with a calculator, they give you a wrong price at the end (of course never in your favour). Why do you want the spa to be included in your accommodation ? There are spa麓s everywhere (starting from around 10鈧?for 2 hours... some are really good even at that price... simple, but ok). Simple and not too bad (dirty) accomodations start at around 30 US$ and can climb to normal western level (e.g. Conrad Hotel). Simpler places are called "Losmen", but there are also good losmen with nice cottages and a swimming pool. If you don麓t book in advance (I never do that), stay one or 2 nights in a not too expensive place in Kuta/Legian/Seminyak near the beach (this is also where the action is... the expensive western hotels are remote, ecept for the hardrock hotel) and search for something you really like and do bargain. Don麓t go by taxi... they bring you to places where they get a commission... look into a tourist guide, select a few places and then go by yourself to have a look at them... if you go by taxi, just let them drop you off outside the courtyard of the hotel. If it麓s very cheap, it might be without aircon and without hot water - so if those things are important to you, ask for them... but if you don麓t have aircon, you won麓t need a hot shower either.... If you wanna drive around, always take a car with driver or join a tour... if you drive by yourself, in case of an accident you麓ll be really into trouble (you will need an international driving license and enough money to pay the victims and bribe the police.... and as a foreigner... it will always be your fault, even if it wasn麓t your fault at all). If you want a few days away from the bars and the noise of Kuta, go to Ubud. There are also good places for food there: suckling pig at IBU OKA (only lunch... don麓t come too late... there麓s only one suckling pig)... beware it is really hot and spicy, but good, although the place looks simple. Another good place is the DIRTY DUCK (bebek bengil). Places to stay: http://www.asiarooms.com/indonesia/bali/... Try to stay near Monkey Forest road as this is the heart of Ubud. There might be higher rated places at a similar price, but they麓re remote. There are also nice places between this road and the river which runs parallel to the road... just dare to walk around and explore those places... some of them are good value for money. Others Cool! I'll be doing the same thing too..I'll go to Bali and Kuala lumpur alone...I'll be backpacking on September..Anyway, post your experience and everything else and lemme know? =) You will be fine if you travel alone to bali. Just don't walk alone at night down dark alleys or take candy from strangers, etc. :~) I stayed at the hard rock hotel when I was there and it was great. spa prices were reasonable, as well as the food. You can eat dinner for less than 10 USD, next to the pool and watch a movie on the beach too! Just be mindful of where you are and who is around you, and you should be fine. Learn how to bargain, and never buy something at the price it is fisrt offered to you. Walk away and often they will offer it to you for less than what you originally countered! You'll be safe in bali during the day time. Just don't be a curious person at night... You need to be with a friend at night. I've seen many foreigners walking alone in bali so it's relatively safe. Just make sure you keep an eye on your possession at all times. However.... This is an ultimate error all foreign tourists make... They are culturally insensitive to their host countries. Make sure you do your homework or you'll end up being called a "bule". Plus the people are really kind. You don't demand respect just because you are an American or non indonesian. Treat the locals with respect, and they treat you with respect. I've seen so many people abuse the locals... if you get the respect part correct, you'll have a good time. Treat the locals like crap... you'll be in a lot of trouble. Trust me... 20 years in living in Jakarta Indonesia has made me aware how some americans can be really rude.
