Travel Info true or false? Travel Tips False. Not only Israel and the US became strong allies only during the late 60's, but In fact, the US obeyed the UN weapon embargo on Israel during Israel's Independence War (1947-1949). Israel and the US became especially close allies following the Cold War and the results of the Six Days War (June, 1967). On the early 60's, the Arab's main allies and weapon suppliers were the Soviets. Israel's main weapon supplier on these years was France. After the Six Days War, in which Israel defeated the Arabs, the Soviets tried to minimize the results of the war by using the UN Security Council to force Israel to give up over the gains it got in the war (this includes the withdrawal of Israel to the 1949 cease fire lines). In addition, a day after the war ended, France declared a weapon embargo upon Israel. As a result of the US need to balance the Soviet influence in the Middle East, the fact that Israel was the only democracy in the region, and the Israeli need for international support and a substitute for the French military industry, the US and Israel became close allies.
