Travel Info Going to Jerusalem with older person will we have difficulty getting about want to go toyad vashem? Travel Tips For longer distances I used shared-taxis & buses and found them reasonably priced. You may find taxis more convenient, if your travelling companion is less mobile, but ensure that the driver turns the meter on - and get out if they say it isn't working - this is a known scam, designed to rip off tourists for as much as possible. Alternatively check with your hotel or guest-house, in advance, as to how much the fare should be or join an organised tour. Be aware that the streets within the old city are narrow, cobbled & busy, so you may need to stop for a sit-down quite a bit - the whole area is pedestrianised but there are plenty of churches, cafes and coffee shops to take a break in. Expect to spend a long time at Yad Vashem - it's very moving, as you probably expect. Allow a day (or two) to cover the Israel museum properly too. Check opening hours (and days) before setting off. Have a fantastic time! Others It might be a bit of a challenge to do a lot of walking since Jerusalem is a hilly city. However, if you use cabs (busses are a cheaper alternative, but are far less convenient), then I think you should be OK. Just remember to ask them to turn on the 'monei' (the meter), otherwise, they'll try to charge you a fare that's about $1-$5 more than you should be paying. You can get around Yad VaShem without a problem but rest of Jerusalem is a very hilly city but you can get around easily with a car (or cab). Good Luck!! I've pushed my mother-in-law around Israel in a wheelchair and it's not easy. There are very few slopes and the kerbs are high. Also there are a lot of hills. |
