Israel released new figures on the disease and its impact in the Jewish state.

According to Health Ministry figures, 341 Israelis were diagnosed as HIV positive in 2004, among them 96 newborns who contracted the virus from their mothers during pregnancy.

The total number of AIDS sufferers in Israel is around 4,300. While health officials say most are gay men or intravenous drug users, the incidence of AIDS also is on the rise among heterosexuals, especially teenagers.

Since 1981, 4,141 HIV carriers and AIDS patients have been diagnosed, 946 have died or left the country, and about 4,300 here are still living with the virus.

Tel Aviv鈥檚 Sourasky Medical Center said that AIDS is affecting an ever-widening population.

鈥淭he figures are very worrisome and point to a dangerous trend,鈥?said Dr. Dan Turner, head of the AIDS center at the hospital.

Many young people have sexual encounters without using a condom and are exposing themselves to a kind of 鈥淎IDS roulette鈥?that is liable to get them infected, he added. 鈥淚t is a serous infectious disease that shortens life and significantly harms the quality of life.鈥?br />
Dr. Daniel Shemtov, the Health Ministry鈥檚 point man on AIDS, said that half of all HIV carriers from the Ethiopian immigrant community were infected in Israel.

He also said that 238 new HIV carriers were diagnosed and 22 AIDS patients died in the past year in Israel.

Most of the carriers and AIDS patients are engaged in gay sex, drug users or Ethiopian immigrants, he said. However, 30 of the new cases are young people ages 18 to 30 who are not intravenous drug users.

Israel has seven hospital centers where HIV is tested and where the disease is treated. The basket of health services includes the basic drug 鈥渃ocktail鈥?and is provided by the health funds to all who need it; more expensive drugs needed by certain patients who have developed resistance to the conventional drugs are not.

A special program of support and education is in place to help immigrants from countries where HIV is endemic. The ministry is not sponsoring any special or major events, but is continuing its educational media campaign promoting the use of condoms to prevent the spread of the virus.
