Travel Info What is the difference between the Levites and the Kohanim? Travel Tips Both Aaron and Moses were descendants of Levi, and hence of the tribe of Levi. However, God selected Aaron and his progeny to serve as priests, hence they became 'super-levites' called kohanim which means "priests". Essentially, Kohanim are a subset of Levites, though one cannot cross from one group to the other. During the temple periods, the Kohanim were in charge of the service and the sacrifices, while the Levites functioned as support for the Kohanim, as well as primary Hymn and Psalm singers. In this day and age where we have no temple, there are only slight differences in practice. In general, Kohanim are prohibited from coming in contact with a corpse, unless the unfortunate was in the first step of relation (Father, Mother, [unmarried] Sister, Brother, Son, Daughter, Spouse). Also, when Jews chant from the Torah, a Kohen is honoured by having the first portion to bless over, whereas a Levite receives the second and Israelites receive the rest. In addition, in Israel, Kohanim bless the populace during morning services. Others The Levites are from the tribe of Levy and the Kohanim are descendants of Aaron. Levi was the tribe to which both Moses and Aaron belonged. Kohanim are direct descendents from Moses's brother Aaron, the first priest; historically Kohanim served as Temple priests. In general, there are three types of Jews. Yisrael, Levi and Kohen. Hope that helps Levites are from Levi.Most or all levites are born Jews.Kohanims are all born Jews.You cant convert and become a kohanim since the kohanim comes from the priest.There are restrictions for kohanims like they have to marry kohanims or Levis only.But the difference that isn't that broad is that to be a levi you have to have a Jewish mother.But surprisingly to be a kohanim you have to have a Jewish father because women couldn't be priest but if they came from a priestly family then the mother would have to be Jewish. I come from the tribe of israel.The tribe of israel is filled with orthodox and ashkenazi and and some sephardim. Both of the are terrorist!! in this time.. |
