What's the difference betwen Haredim and Hassidim? |
Travel Info Just curious, I've lived in Jerusalem but I'm a Christian. Travel Tips Before I start to 'waffle', I am atheist, but still interested in what makes the religious world tick. HAREDIM is basically opposed to Zionism, the Talmud mentions that all Jewish people have been bound by 3 oaths. 1... not to ascend to the land of Israel by group force. 2...not to rebel against other nations of the world 3...not to delay the coming of the Jewish Messiah through their own sins. Followers of Haredim think that Zionists have violated all 3 oaths. HASSIDIM... There are many different groups associated with Hasidim, I don't profess to know much about all the different groups, but then again I don't really want to!! Just the basics will do me! What I do know is that this group also has strong anti Zionist views, but not as strong as the views held by Haredim, for example their views against the State of Israel are nowhere near as strong as the views held by Haredim! You have just read a gross over simplification of the differences, and I'm ashamed I don't know more, but it covers all I need to know. I know exactly where I am with Islam and Christianity etc, they are fairly easy to fathom out, it's good to find a Christian that takes an interest in other folks religion, makes a pleasant change! BTW if you think you may have a convert on your hands you certainly haven't!!! Just a note to 'somebody' (avatar name) he wants to know where I got these 3 oaths from but doesnt allow mail, so here it is:- Talmudic tractate Ketuboth p.111 Oath one You (Jewish people) should not rebel aginst God by rebelling against nations! The other two oaths follow same tract, check it out. Others First I would like to say that the 3rd oath is that the nations of the world cannot overly persecute the Jews. Chasidim are followers of the Baal Shem Tov, an Eastern European Rabbi believed to have had extra-ordinary abilities. They are known for putting the spirituality back in the practice, by singing and dancing and so on. The knock on Hassidim is that they leave the halacha (Jewish law) behind in favor of the spirituality some times. Haredim on the other hand is a blanket term for ultra-orthodox Jews. In general, Haredim hold certain beliefs that set them apart from the other Jews, for example the belief that Jews may not change their mode of dress (Many chasidim also share this view, which is why they are thought of as similar). Haredim, in general, take a strict view on Jewish law and are resistant to change. Most Haredi groups are anti-zionist, though some are not. Also in general, Haredi sects are divided by which primary Rabbi/Yeshiva they adhere to. Hassidim are a subgroup of Haredim. Hassidim are more spiritual and religious. they dress with all black. they dont talk to women, besides their wives. (dont talk to men besides for their husbands). And the Haredim arent so religious as the Hassidim. they dont have the same concepts. Jewish Haredi jews follow a more relaxed form of Orthodox Judaism. But they are more traditional than modern orthodox jews.Haredi jews are Haredis but alot of haredi jews are haredim jews. All Haredi poskim (authorities in Jewish law) forbid television and films, reading secular newspapers and using the Internet for non-business purposes. Many Haredim view manner of dress as an important way to ensure Jewish identity and distinctiveness. Hasidic jews believe the sam thing only to the highest exsinct I am a modox jew.Modern orthodox jew |
