Can someone tell me what the law is in Israel, concerning private ownership of handguns?

Not true.
You can own a weapon only if you get a special permit from the ministry of internal affairs. In order to get one you have to do a training every year, to have a clean past (no criminal record etc.) and carry your weapon under certain circumstances (for working as security guard, if you live in the periphery etc.). It is very different from the US.

Everyone in Israel can own a gun..if you are an israeli citizen. So you need to be Jewish. if your not a jew, you cant be a citizen of Israel. Muslims and christians cannot own guns in Israel. Tourists cannot own or possess guns in israel.
Paperclip-UA-4-life has no clue what they are talking about. One does not need to be Jewish to be an Israeli citizen. Nearly 24% of Israeli citizens are non-Jews. There are Muslim Arabs, Bedouin Arabs, Christian Arabs, Druze and Circassians living in Israel -- all of them non-Jewish and with full rights of citizenship.

In the Occupied Territories, all Palestinian guns are illegal, but Jewish settlers are allowed semi-automatic rifles and carry them most of the time.
