Hamas fires rockets into Israel every day. Israel responds by taking Hamas officials prisoner. Hamas says it? |
Travel Info will retaliate because of this. I am confused. Surely it would be easier to just stop sending rockets into Israel which just makes Israel defend itself. Am I missing something here ? Travel Tips What happened was Hamas was fighting Fatah. However, Hamas is outnumbered by Fatah, so any prolonged battle would result in their defeat. So Hamas fires hundreds of rockets at Israel (200 in the last week and a half) hoping to draw Israel into enterring Gaza, thus giving Hamas and Fatah a common enemy to fight against. Israel tried to stay out of it, but in the end could not tolerate dozens of rockets falling every day, and decided to take action. That action was repeated airstrikes on Hamas targets, and now arresting Hamas officials. Israel needs to send the message that it is more costly to draw Israel into confrontation than it is to draw Fatah into confrontation, which it is trying to do. To another poster who thinks the world's reaction to the election of Hamas is hypocritical: The US and EU support democracy, but that does not mean that anybody elected democratically should be fully accepted. By that logic none of you should criticize Israel as, after all, its leaders are elected democratically. Despite supporting democracy, one still has to give credence to who's elected. The world decided not to fund a government bent on the destruction of Israel, and I think that is a fair decision. Others No your'e not and yes it would make sense but this is an age old problem that quite honestly won't ever be sorted. Two groups of people wanting the same thing, impossible. Lived in Israel in the 80's at the beginning on Interfada Hamas will constantly try and provoke Isreal as any retaliation, Isreal will always come worse off in public opinion. Trouble is, Isreal and the west has put the West Bank in a pressure cooker enviroment. They cut off most supplies, take taxes with no return and now the west has put a trade embargo on the Palestinians so there is no money coming in. I know that Hamas are not the good guys, but the west (America mainly) says it supports democracy. Then, as soon as Hamas are democratically voted into power, the world punishes them by refusing to trade with the. Makes the situation much worse and stinks of hipocrasy.....you can vote for who you want, but only if we like them too! Both sides are actiing like naughty children and needs a firm parent to knock their heads together and sort it out. I belive the UN needs to enforce some of the mandates it has issued, but it doesn't have the balls to stand up to them. Compromise can be achieved - looked at N Ireland its all down to being childish. its like kids at school in a stone fight, one throws and another throws back. if none of them will submit then they must work together. if none of these can be acheived then its just an ongoing battle and will remain so untill 1 of the 2 is accomplished. its so easy really but it shows how pathetic they are. Israel was created back in the 1940's by taking over Palestinian lands. Palestine understandably wants its land back. These days Israel is continually trying to reinforce its position by operating militarily against Palestine. Whilst I disagree with terrorist organisations of any kind, Israel's army has been acting in a manner very similar to terrorists. There is no easy answer to the Palestine / Israel question, but there is fault on both sides. My own view, being neither Jewish or Muslim, is that the Palestinian people have a far longer held 'right' to their land than the Israeli's do. And I think the USA has a lot to answer for in supporting many of Israel's unnecessarily hostile actions. Ignoring progaganda, reading a variety of sources and trying to be understanding. |
