From Jerusalem or tel aviv is it easy to get to Bethlehem by public transport?

my reason for asking is i get the impression that to get there you need to take a taxi that is palestinian owned or take 2 taxis one that is isreali and then one that is palestinian. the thing is i dont want endless hassle with taxis and roadblocks etc

what is the truth and how easy is it to get there and what is there in bethlehem bar the church of the nativity

There is good public transportation, and you can get buses from Bus Station opposite Damascus gate to Bethlehem.

I don't know about the public transport system but I would imagine that you would be safer taking taxis. Buses seem to be a target for bombers. I believe that part of the old Bethlehem has been excavated and is under the level of the modern town. I am sure there are many sites of historical interest.
Jerusalem and Tel Aviv are lovely but don't go to Bethlehem - Seriously!
