I once read that during Israel's War of Indepdence? |
Travel Info The Syrian ambassador told the United Nations that they started it. Does anyone have a transcript of the General Assemblies actual proceedings? Travel Tips first of all, there was no Israeli's war of independence Israel was created in 1948 by the Balfour declaration in which England made a promise to make a Jewish state on the land of Palestine after the world war 2 Others knight: MAJOR correction: The Balfour declaration was made on the 2nd of November, 1917. This was before the holocaust and World War Two. This was right after World War one. Arthur James Balfour and the British cabinet realized that the Jewish people need a country of their own and cannot be subjected to antisemetism anymore (look what happened a bit later...). We had formally been promised all of Israel including trans-Jordan. The British gave that land to the Arabs, who founded Jordan. The idea to split Israel into a Jewish state and an Arab state was proposed a couple of times but the Arabs wouldn't accept it. Towards the years leading up to 1948, the British tended to take the Arab side (there were a couple reasons of logical interest for this). Because of the growing violence of Arabs-Jews (attacks, massacres 1920-21, 1929, 1936-39) and both against the British, the British left in 1948. The War of Independence actually started as attacks from the Arabs on the 29th of December, when the United Nations decided officially on two states for two nations. These attacks were launched by Israeli-Arabs (not called Israeli then...). The day the British left, the 14th of May, David Ben-Gurion declared the foundation of the State of Israel. I have no idea about the Syrian ambassador saying that, but I think all the Arab countries around us started the war at about the same time... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1948_arab-i... maybe it'll help ^ Israel鈥檚 policies (not a myth) throughout its illegal military occupation of Palestinian territory, which have surpassed their South African counterparts, include house demolitions; Jews-only colonies and roads; uprooting hundreds of thousands of trees; indiscriminate killings of civilians, particularly children; incessant theft of land and water resources; denying freedom of movement to millions under occupation, cutting up the occupied Palestinian territory into Bantustans, some entirely caged by walls, fences and hundreds of roadblocks. Sixty years since the Nakba, Israel鈥檚 planned campaign of ethnic cleansing against the Palestinian people, and 40 years into its military occupation of Palestinian and other Arab territory, Israel has consistently and relentlessly violated basic human rights and relevant precepts of international law with utter impunity. Moreover, Israel鈥檚 war of aggression against Lebanon last year caused more than one thousand civilian deaths, not to mention massive destruction to infrastructure and decimation of entire residential neighbourhoods. |
