Jerusalem:Who owns it? |
Travel Info This up comming week will be the 40 th year Israel has possesion of temple Mount after a 2500 yr sabatical,Could it be A New Era? Travel Tips a simple answer Jerusalem is Isreali Others 40th year since a 1900 year sabbatical actually (the Romans destroyed the Temple in 70 CE). As of now, Israel owns it, though I suppose until a final border arangement is worked out nothing is certain. EDIT: I disagree that 586 BCE is the key date. Following the Babylonian destruction, the Persians granted the Hebrews the right to return to their homeland and rebuild their temple in Jerusalem. Some years later Alexander the Great came through with his troops and defeated the Persians, setting up the Seleucid dynasty in modern day Turkey (really set up by a general after Alexander died). That dynasty spawned Antiochus of the Hannuka story infamy, and following him the Hasmonean dynasty. The Hasmoneans were vassals to none, and created an independent Hebrew state centered around Jerusalem. It was only later that they bent the knee to Rome. Thus I say: 70 CE is the true date to compare, and not 586 BCE. peace 2 want it It is part of Israel, but everyone should have access to its holy sites. On a legal level, Israel owns it. That being said, the temple mount is and should be accessible to all people of all faiths. Sadly, I trust Israel far more than the U.N. in keeping this place accessible to all. East Jerusalem is a Palestinian City and West Jerusalem is the Israeli city. Now Fanatic Israelis want to keep occupying land that was never part of Israel. There is not one country in the world is willing to recognize that East Jerusalem is part of Israel. Jewish Holy places in East Jerusalem dose not mean an ownership of the Palestinian city by illegal Israeli occupation. Those Israelis are mixing religion with citizenship or nationality and the funny thing here they call themselves secular people. |
