How best to resolve the legacy of 1967 war? |
Travel Info Forty years after Israel's victory over its Arab neighbours, Palestinians and Israelis are still searching for peace. What is the way forward? On June 5th 1967, Israel launched war against Egypt, Jordan and Syria. Egypt in particular had been acting very aggressively towards Israel before the war started; many Israelis felt they needed to fight to ensure survival. Israel defeated the armies of its Arab neighbours in just six days. It gained vast swathes of territory, control of which is still at issue in stalled peace negotiations. Millions of Palestinians remain stateless. And today they are segregated from their families by Heavy handed tactics used by the Israelis. Collective Punishment is used that punishes all Palestinians, homes are destroyed for roads to be used by only Israelis, or to make a new check point that humiliates the Palestinians who wait for hours to pass through, for work, school, medical reasons & from familiy members. Travel Tips Israel is built on a stolen land. Israel everyday proves that no way to deal with Israel only by using force. That's very dangerous when someone feels the most powerful as USA is backing and supporting. Politicians should think what they are going to do if for any reason or suddenly USA is not supporting Israel. When a country is using all kinds of force against all neighbors and original residents of the area, the normal is it'll be one day the weak side. This is the nature of everything. How can they expect the people who suffered the Israeli violence will act then. Others Quite true... Yes, Israel defeated the Arab armies, isn't that great! Palestinians ceasing the use of terrorist attacks against Israeli civilians. Anyhow, what is there to resolve? Blaming the war of '67for the disparity between Israel and her Arab neighbors is the same as blaming the Crusades for 9/11 in America. The problems are more immense then simple racism or religious diversity, though these are serious issues. THe problems also corilate with Israel's governing. A Democracy in the midst of totalitarian regimes creates instability for the dictatorships. Even if you eliminate the religion and the memory of the past the systems in place will be forever at odds. It will only be solved when the people who believe in and follow Jesus Christ as Messiah, on both sides, Christian Arabs and Messianic Jews, get together spiritually and practically and lead the way to peace (not just political peace, but heart peace). They must put aside their national loyalties and give first loyalty to Jesus. This would cause the people and leaders on both sides to see that 1) There is an agenda wider than theirs 2) Peace and genuine love between the two nations is possible 3) If Jesus' people can bear these fruits, maybe He is haMeshiach after all. I like it when I get flak from both sides (Jewish and Muslim) because it confirms to me I'm doing something right. Yes, if only the Arab states would have agreed to peace in 1967 in return for all the territory that Israel has just conquered. Instead three months after the war the Arab states convened the Khartoum Resolution. which among other things stated the famous three no's No peace with Israel No recognition of Israel No negotiations with Israel It is kind of hard to make peace with someone that refuses to do so... It is also kind of hard to turn back the clock. If only the Arab league would have accepted pre-67 borders for peace after the 67 war. |
