Is it true that autopsies are not permited under Jewish law? |
Travel Info If yes, why is that ? Travel Tips Kind of. Judaism teaches that we must respect the dead, and not despoil their bodies. Also, one must bury somebody fairly quickly. This means that for the most part, autopsies aren't allowed. However, there is one major reason for exception. If the autopsy would save a life, then it will be permitted. For example, if someone died, and there's a chance that he had some hereditary disease that a sibling might also have, an autopsy would be permitted to diagnose and thus save his sibling. Others Not under Torah Law as for the oral tradition, I do not know. This I do know, what G-d spoke, He wrote. Man was created in the image of G-d so holiness of human beings is why we don't tamper with them. It's so true. That is correct, autopsies, as a general rule, are not allowed. If there is a legal or medical requirement for an autopsy, then it will go ahead, but there has to be a representative from the Beis Din (Rabbinical Court) present to make sure that the body is treated appropriately- and only what is necessary is done, and nothing more. This is because we are taught that after death the soul lingers near to the body, and it takes seven days before that attachment is lessened, but even after that their is an attachment though much weaker. As such, we try to bury the body as quickly as possible (in the same day if possible) and as whole as possible. That is why you see those people picking up every single piece of body they can find at the scenes of suicide bombings- and then matching them to the victims so they can be buried. Because we believe that the soul will be pained if the body is mistreated or buried with parts missing, we strive to make sure that the body is untouched when it is buried- thus the prohibition on unnecessary autopsies. Yes that is true. |
