I am a Christian and therefore, my places of choice that I visit in Israel would be all the places Jesus would have been known to walk. I was there for 3 weeks and visited among other places: Jerusalem , the Galilee area:which we stayed at Tiberius,Nazareth, Bethlehem , Bethany , River Jordan, Qumran Caves and Carmel. My favorite of all the places was the Galilee area which somehow felt more peaceful and relaxed. We took a boat ride on the Sea of Galilee and also watched a spectacular sunrise there. My friends who live there tell me that they have built a wall around Bethlehem and that of course, saddens them. It's not as nice with that wall! The residents feel restrictive. I also enjoyed the "Old City" of Jerusalem which has 4 different quarters or communities: the Armenian Quarter, The Muslim Quarter, the Jewish Quarter and the Orthodox Christian Quarter. Another favorite place is "The Garden Tomb", where the Protestant Denomination of Christians , believe was the place of Jesus' tomb and site of His resurrection. I had fun shopping in "The Old City" of Jerusalem, where it is OK to haggle over prices of things you want to buy. I haggled over the cost of a leather backpack. The vendor wanted $60 for it but I haggled and purchased it for $30+. It is fun to haggle but it is also a skill. You don't want to bring the price down so unreasonably but try to talk it down some. I felt the bag was worth around $30, more or less. I did not have time or extra money to go to Tel Aviv so we did not go there. But we did visit other places like Beit Shan, Acre, Joppa, the Bell Caves,Caesarea -by -the -sea and Caesarea Philippi, and several archaeological sites.
The three weeks was quite an extensive visit we made in 1995.
Food was pretty good. I esp enjoyed the Gyros we ate in Bethlehem. They call it "Shwarma". It is lamb meat grilled with spices and served in a tortilla- like wrap bread with a creamy sauce and some lettuce or green veg. We also tried the Falafels which were chickpeas rolled into balls and deep fried and then put into those wraps(bread). I did not like that too much....felt rich for my tastebuds! If you can, try the fresh dates that have been chilled - so sweet and cold, it is out of this world! We tried it at Tabgha by the Sea of Galilee, near the Church of the Loaves and Fishes. It was very hot in June. We went at the end of May and into June. In May, it was cool in the mornings and evenings . It was very pleasant throughout the day.
In June, the heat was oppressive. Bottled water that was sold cold from coolers by street vendors soon became room temperature. I took the cable car up to Masada but my husband thought that since he is so used to walking in his job, he could walk to the summit. However, the heat proved him wrong and he gave up the climbing halfway.
You could also pay for a donkey ride and a camel ride. We took these in the desert area of Wadi Kelt. Then drank some tea in a Bedouin tent. My group went to the Holocaust Museum. I took one look in the first exhibit which mentioned children that lost their lives in the Holocaust and because one of them was the age of my older son, I started weeping and could not continue. We had a dip in the Dead Sea. Boy! the sand was so hot at that time of the day,one cannot walk barefooted. The water was so salty it stung my younger son's eyes and he screamed in pain and a friend quickly carried him to the faucet to wash off the saltiness. Because of the high salt content, it is easy to float on the Dead Sea.
Experience.
Your best off taking a tour around Israel than just going to one place!
