Travel Info "Hatikva" Travel Tips It was written in the early 1880's by a Galician Jew named Naftali Herz Imber, it was originally a 9 stanza poem called Tikvatainu which means our hope. The tune was based on the Italian song "La Mantovana" The lyrics are: Kol od baleivav p'nimah Nefesh y'hudi homiyah Ulfa'atei mizrach kadimah Ayin l'tziyon tzofiyah Od lo avdah tikvateinu Hatikvah bat sh'not alpayim Lihyot am chofshi b'artzeinu Eretz tziyon viyrushalayim The translation is: As long as in the heart, within, A Jewish soul is yearning, And towards the end of the East An eye still watches toward Zion Our hope is not yet lost, The hope of two thousand years, To be a free nation in our own land, The land of Zion and Jerusalem. (I got the translation off of wikipedia... but I didn't really need it, I could have translated it by myself) Source(s): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/hatikva... my 5th grade music class Other Travel Tips The anthem was written by Naftali Herz Imber, a secular Galician Jew, and who moved to what was then Palestine in the early 1880s. The anthem's underlying message is about "hope," which we all live for and the hope of the Zionists that they would someday attain national independence in the Land of Israel.
