English is the official language of Jamaica. Patois or Jamaica Creole is widely spoken but everyone there is able to communicate with you as long as you speak English.

Joe D, try not to be so American. Just because something is different from what you are used to doesn't mean that it is wrong. The people don't drive on the WRONG side of the street. They drive on A DIFFERENT side of the street from what you are accustomed to seeing. Also, it is not only uneducated people who speak patois. If you had really spent enough time there getting to know the people, you would have discovered that everyone speaks it at the appropriate time. Black Jamaicans, Chinese-Jamaicans, Syrian-Jamaicans, Indo-Jamaicans, White Jamaicans all speak it at one time or another, and since they speak English, why wouldn't they understand you? BTW, the reason why you didn't have a good time in Jamaica is because you are so pompous and the people saw right through you. If you expect to find America in every country that you visit, then stay in America.

THERE IS AN OFFICIAL LANGUAGE - IT IS ENGLISH!!!!!!!!! EDUCATE YOURSELF ABOUT THE CARIBBEAN BEFORE YOU START INSULTING ITS ISLAND.
I AM FROM BARBADOS WHERE WE SPEAK THE QUEEN'S ENGLISH, BETTER THAN AMERICANS.
It's the language used in school and on the radio, but you wouldn't be able to understand the less-educated ones. The fun part is they can understand you. It's a weird place, though. They all drive on the wrong side of the street.
