is it safe to travel/live in Jamaica.? i am american and i am fascinated by that place.....but i have heard so many stories.

It is safe. There is crime everywhere in the world, you just have to stay out of those places. I recommend staying in Montego Bay area.

check out the forum in trip advisor.com [ I think] and ask folks who have been there.. you will hear bad things no matter where you go ,and for sure you need to know for your own safety,I spent 2 weeks there and travelled with people who actually live there so I guess I would be safer that way.however I did get to go off on my own and the fear was not there as I had been trained to believe.I didn't get to Kingston but I want to next time.Your facination with jamaica will only increase once you have been there yourself..as for me I am tottally in love......with the Island.just go...be safe..be travel smart as always ...but go!
i visited jamaica in nov of 2006 for my honeymoon.. we stayed at sandals in montego bay.. it was absolutely amazing.. while we were there we wanted to see what the rest of jamaica is like.. it is alot different then in the resort but i never felt like i was in danger. people always want to see you things, but that is there way of life. they do drive on the opposite side of the road by the way.. i would reccomend going there. its such a learning experience. i cannot wait to go back!!!!!
some parts of jamaica are safe.....eg. St. Mary....... But I wouldn't live there..... its much to slow. Just stay away from Clarendon St. Catherine and Kingston (not so bad lately) and you should be fine.... the crime rate everywhere else is like the average place in the world.

I think sometimes the crime is exaggerated...... Jamaica is supposed to be a 'tropical paradise' so everyone expect it to be crime free.... in the real world....wherever you have humans, you'll have crime.

safe is relative but rest assured you will enjoy your trip, try not to do anything stupid such as walking with large amounts of cash , convincing yourself that it is safe to try and export drugs. be your self
