Is the Jamaican elephant extinct? |
Travel Info I'm still doing that project on Jamaica can someone help me out I have lokked everywhere and I can't find it.Please??? Travel Tips There is not really any elephants on the island of Jamaica. Unless they have been shipped from another country (prob africa) to the island. I dont even think we have one at the Hope Zoo, which is the zoo in kingston. If ur looking at distinctly animals from jamaica, I would suggest the Lizard(ground, green, croaking), Humming Bird, mongoose,Jamaican black bird, ring tailed pigeon and yellow billed parrot. Others Come to think of it, I haven't seen one of those in awhile... I didn't realize there were elephants on the Jamaican Island. How did they get there. I went to Jamaica, the tour guide never mentioned it and I definitely did run into any. http://www.mytravelscenes.com There has never been elephants on the island of Jamaica, that is both before colonization or after. They certainly could not have migrated here naturally as that would be a whole lot of sea to cross and they cant float over on driftwood or anything of the sort like smaller animals. In recent times no human would have thought to bring elephants here it would be ludicrous. The island is too small to have ever sustained a elephant popluation plus the damage and havoc they would have done uprooting trees trampling forests I'm sure we would have known. No elephant bones have ever been unearthed and their is no historical evidence of their presence has ever been documented. Also we don't have savannahs here they really would have no habitat or food. Now if you were referring to the Jamaican Elephant Man then he's alive and kicking in North West St.Andrew, more than likely. Jamaica is in the Caribbean sea south of Cuba west of Haiti. On a map of the united states ,locate Florida then move south south east past Cuba.OR 18* 46'41.92" N---79* 30' 18. 42"w |
