According to the US government : http://travel.state.gov/travel/cbpmc/cbp... travel to the Caribbean will require a passport "as early as" January 1, 2008. You will need a certified copy of your birth certificate, and a valid (i.e., not expired) government photo id (usually a drivers license) for travel prior to January 1,2008. So, if you are returning prior to January 1, 2008 you will not need a passport, but you well (unless they change the law again) need one after that time.
